So Pennington got his third operation on his throwing shoulder (but for a different injury then the first two) and will hit FA next year.

I'm not asking if you think Tanny will offer him a deal (no one has a crystal ball)... if I had to guess I'd say he gets re-signed by the Dolphins for another season (to develop Henne). But with Ainge on the team and Sanchez as the starter do you think bringing in a great guy as Pennington would be a good move for this team?

I'd love it. He is still good enough to be a #2 QB and Sanchez (and Ainge) could definitely benefit from having him around. Not to mention when he is done he could take up the QB coach position in case it frees up.

Would you as a fan want him back, or do you think he's finished?

PS I'm assuming we wave goodbye to Clemens next offseason.

Uhhh... nope. I'd rather see what Ainge can do, he's just too fragile and who knows whether or not he can perform. He already has a rag arm...

As much as I like Pennington, and I do, especially as a person, I think Ainge can do admirably taking over the #2 spot. Clemens should be traded. We pick up a #3 QB off the 6 or 7th round or from the UDFA list.

Pennington would command too much salary as a veteran; even in a backup role. If Pennington was serious about going into coaching, I would keep the door open there as I beleive his intelligence could be very good in training a QB.

If he comes in understanding that his job is to back up Sanchez, then yes. In the event that Sanchez goes down, Chad is the perfect game manager.

I just remebered now that we already used our 7th to "draft" O'connell so basically we already have our #3 QB behind Sanchez and Ainge...

I'd love that too.. I think he has a future in coaching if he is interested.

I could see it, it wouldn't be either/or with Ainge because I don't think Clemens will be here. One thing we could use right now is a veteran QB to have around to help Sanchez. We don't know how durable Sanchez is going to be, remember Chad didn't get hurt until his second year playing. Chad would be great for a short stretch of games without having to rely on him to be healthy for a 16 game season. He knows the offense and the team, not impossible.

I wouldn't mind him as a backup QB. I'd imagine he could get a shot as a starter in oakland, cleveland or washington though.

He could protect the ball and give us a shot to win a few games if Sanchez went down.

I'd be a little worried that he'd outplay Sanchez in TC, making life tough for everybody. No thanks.

He'll be Favre's replacement in Minny.

He needs to retire.. he can't even manage clipboard duties with one wing. I like the idea of him becoming a coach of some sort.. he has the tools for that job at least.

How's he expected to win a third and fourth Comeback Player of the Year as Sanchez's backup?! Dude needs to sign with Cleveland, play them to 9-7, win the CBPOTY, get cut, sign with the Patriots when Brady gets run over by Sione Pouha on a freak play in the third game of the season, step in, bring them to another Superbowl, and win CBPOTY again.

    Irony doesn't play backup. Geesh.

Nah, we're well past that now. He'd be a good security blanket. Think about it, Sanchez misses a few games now we're up the creek with Clemens and next year we won't even have him.

I am no Chad Fan when it comes to his tenure as a QB here and particularly for the way his career divided the fanbase, but I have long felt he has coaching in his future. It's funny how rarely Qb's get far with coaching careers in the NFL, but I think Chad could.

As a backup Qb though? No way. He's too fragile for that role. Remember what happened when he went down and an equally fragile Fiedler stepped on the field? The team lost two qb's in one day, that's what.

Plus he played for Miami. F him.

    Heh.

Yeah, nothing against Ainge but I don't really want to see what he can do at this point.
