with cutting Mawae? I am not talking about offensive leadership, although I do believe Kevin was a leader on the O, there are others, while their styles may be different, they can be as effective(Martin, Coles, even Penny when healthy). I am talking about toughness. It has concerned me since Herm took over that the team was built up of nice guys who can ball. That's great and all, but I dont see any intimidation factor out of the Jets, and the one guy IMO who cold explode on an opposing team, was just released. The skill and talent of Vilma, Ellis, Drob, Martin, Coles, are top notch, but I dont think we have a resident goon (to oversimplify the situation) anymore. Mawae would swing at guys, play all banged up and not fear a sole, some would say even still intimidate, but now, who do we look to for fire, guts, and the occasional dirty work? Championship teams have these guys on their rosters, you may not like them, but you have to worry/respect them (Ray Lewis, Rodney Harrison types). These guys do as much to intimidate their own team mates as they do the opposition, but I worry that the Jets will be considered "soft" and lose that psychological battle with a lot of teams. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
I agree, the Jets have lost Chrebet and Mawae both who exemplified toughness. Unfortunately we are left with a QB who everytime he gets hit usually is hurt. As much as I hate to say this drafting Cutler with his gunslinger mentality and toughness and a back like Lendale White running over people would greatly help the overall view of the Jets. The Defense I feel is good. Ellis is a tough DE with the monster J. Vilma behind him.
Still have Barton. He is a little bit of a "goon". Remember the playoff game with the Chargers a few years back. He has tendency to aim at the other players head when tackling. Granted he is no Ray Lewis, but I just figured I would throw it out there.
Goon We lost a goon, a great player, and a leader. This is going to hurt us. Kendall at center is going to be a big drop off. Of course, I can see the FO's point of view. Mawae was just too pigheaded to negotiate the contract and they couldn't afford to knuckle under to him.
I hear you on Ellis and Vilma, but they are good, decent, people, at least that is how it seems. you know neither one of them is going to pull a Kyle Turley and heave a helmet, or a Rod Harrison and come flying into pile-ups late. No out of bounds threat. I like to have a guy who has explosive possibilities.
I think we did lose a really great player and person. Just seems like we were quick to boot him out the door.....
Mangini knows the stroke Mawae has. He got Groh kicked out of here because he was too tough. Mangini is expected to run a tough camp, unlike Herm.
Yep we lost our union rep. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_y...Ss4ehDubYF?slug=ap-nfllabor&prov=ap&type=lgns "I think it's playing out exactly like we thought it would," said Kevin Mawae, the New York Jets' union representative until he was cut Sunday by the Jets. "We said as a union that in order for free agency to go off without a hitch, the owners would have to figure out how to divide up the revenue. It's not necessarily the percentage that we're asking but how they spread the wealth."
i think the first problem is getting more talent in here, not so much toughness.....ellis drob coles and martin as you mentioned arent exactly "top notch",...one of them of course because of age and the other three never were....id love a tough team dont get me wrong, but lets get guys in here to fill our holes first, the we;ll figure out if theyre tough enough
Sorry, but I don't agree. Players like Harrison, Sapp, etc., are dirty, cause unnecessary injury, and are prone to the 15 yard penalty. What we need is tough, hardworking, genuine LEADERS (i.e Vilma) to set an example both in the locker room and on the field.
Of all the people we have lost, Mawae's the only one who hurt bad. I think he added something to the team more than just playing his position well, which when he was healthy, was the gold standard in the league. I would have preferred keeping him to Chad, but Chad was apparently more amenable to helping the Jets. Mawae thinks he can do better elsewhere, and maybe he will. I just hope he doesn't feel so much bitterness he decides to wear that team's helmet in Canton.
Barton is not as flashy as Ray Lewis, but I think he is more of a lunatic when he plays than Ray is. Ray is an amazing player, but during the play, he rarely does anything too intimidating... Just makes plays... Barton hits you dirty if he needs to. He's just one of those guys who doesn't care what it takes. It could be away of him compensating for lack of natural talent when compared to guys like Lewis. That intimidation factor is definitely there with him though..
I think we lost a guy who thought he was running the team, in retrospect. Mangini won't tollerate self appointed player-coaches.... and that is what Mawae thought he was. Wake up call Kevin.... Hess and Herm are gone. You're mutiny under Groh, that you led, has come back to bite you in the arse.
We lost a 35year old center that wanted too much money. Lets not romanticize this into anything else ok?
I have no problem getting rid of Mawae. Although it didn't really save us much money. His base salary was $2.8 millon with a number of $4.4 millon. Cutting him saved 1.6 millon so he wasn't cut for money but either because they didn't like him or they wanted to make a point. But what irks me most is why cut him now. Why not do what we did with Cowart last year. Everyone knew we were going to cut Cowart but we hung on to him until we could find someone who could give us some value for him. Mawae is certainly worth as much as the 7th rounder we got for Cowart. The decison to cut Mawae really calls into question the decison making, patience and maturity of the new regime. Cutting him for sake of cutting him and not even trying to get any value for him makes me wonder if our new wonder kids are up to the task of running a pro football team. There is no reason not to have hung onto Mawae for another Month or two to at least attempt to get some value for him. I am not aware of any bonus money that was due him.
