Sorry guys, a bit of insomnia this evening. So, this story seems like horseshit - it's gotten almost no play, and if it was even remotely true it would've been all over. OR.....is it SO true that it's being suppressed? I say it's very unlikely but it does fit nicely with my "Woody is a meddling asshole" theory....haha https://www.jetnation.com/2024/01/0...wanted-ot-in-21-draft-overruled-to-take-zach/
Breer clarified later that he wasn't talking about the 2021 draft, but rather the 2022 draft that Douglas may have wanted to take Ickey Ekwonu with a first round pick in that draft.
It wasn’t Zach. It was the year after. Rumor is he wanted Ekwonu and was overruled by Woody to draft Sauce. I don’t buy it at all.
It appears as though Ikem Ekwonu got his ass kicked this year almost as bad as Becton with 12 penalties/10 sacks allowed. Perhaps a lot of it was QB holding into the ball for too long but it doesn’t look like he’s an elite player.
There's no way Woody overruled anyone on a draft selection; I'd bet a paycheck he couldn't pick Sauce Gardner out of a lineup today (let alone on draft day two years ago).
There should be a giant asterisk and a warning that the entire post this thread is based upon is total bullshit. A sure giveaway, even before the correction by Breer, is the claim that Wilson's uncle is the owner of JetBlue, when he hasn't even been employed there for over sixteen years.
Yes, the whole thing is complete bullshit, but if this were true, then Woody is actually a significantly better talent evaluator than JD. Now, that is one scary thought...
Sadly, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it did turn out that Woody is a better evaluator of talent than Douglas. I mean, look at what Douglas thought was the O-line he needed to go into the season protecting a 39 year old QB. He's had half a decade to fix the O-line and has somehow made it worse. We might actually be better off with Woody picking the players than Douglas, if only because Douglas has proven absolutely incapable of recognizing talent.
I can't get over the fact that JD was an OL himself, it was allegedly his scouting strength, and he turned out to be historically bad at choosing OL. Even his hits like Fant and Moses are marred by the fact that he let them go only to replace them with inferior players. AVT is great but we gave up too much to get him. Has JD had any legitimately good OL moves that aren't marred by some sort of asterisk? I don't think there's a single one.
Sauce may have been a better player and prospect than Ickey but he was also a lock to sell a zillion jerseys at a skill position with such a cool nickname. Let's get real here.
