Did Bruce Smith play end in a 3-4? Is it the formation he got most of sacks in? I don't remember. If the answer to these questions is yes I can see the logic of taking somone like Mario Williams, if it is thought that he could perform in a similar fashion. I don't know of any other ends that made a great impact in the 3-4.
I played some end in the 3-4 back in high school and was always told to tie up the blockers so that the linebackers could make the play.(It used to piss me off because I would just want to shed the blocker and sack the QB myself!)

yes Bruce Smith did play in a 3-4 with Buffalo. Richard Seymour is an amazing end in a 3-4, in passing plays he is able to generate pressure and on running downs he can overpower the LT or take up 2 gaps. Aaron Smith on the Steeleris a very good LE in a 3-4.

The problem is when you get a guy whose 260 pounds and put him at end in a 3-4. Mario Williams can play in a 3-4 or a 4-3. From what I understand he played mostly DE in college but he also played some tackle and linebacker. He's the type of guy you build a defense around.

It doesn't bother you at all that Mario is a bit inconsistent in games and has been known for taking plays off.. It bothers me..

It does bother me, but I think part of that was him knowing that the competition couldn't stop him and getting bored. With that being said he's shown on the field to dominate and he's also a freak of nature with his speed/size/power. He's not a workout warrior who shot up the draft boards. Forgetting Reggie Bush since we don't have a shot at him, I think AJ Hawk is the closest thing in this draft to a sure thing. It's very high for a linebacker to go 4, but Hawk and Vilma would be nice.

Who do you like? I like d'brick but I don't want to use the 4th pick on a LT. Offensive lineman can be drafted later on and coached up. And he doesn't have the body of Walter Jones or Jonathon Ogden.

He's pretty close to Jones (especially considering he's not even in an NFL strength program yet), nowhere near the immobile and overrated Ogden though.

Hawk, Ferguson, Williams are the surest things (which their never is one anyway) with where we sit. I'll be happy with any of them. I'd prefer Brick or Mario over Hawk though. Personally if Williams is there I'd rather have him, then if we can nab Winston at #29 I'll do friggin cartwheels all over the place as we'd have two top 10 talents on the team.

If you read Marios explanation on why his numbers were so inconsistent it was because the first half of the season they wanted him to take on 2 OL on every play and open up things for Lawson and others to get sacks-then the second half the told him to use his speed and get to the QB and thats when his stats flourished-but accoring to anyone who was involved with the situation-he never ever took a play off
