    Also in New York Yankees

The Jets and DL Mike DeVito restructured his contract on May 2, per source. He took a pay cut from $3.11 million to $2.5 million this season. His base salary is now $700,000. Signing bonus of $950,000. Roster bonus of $500,000. Workout bonus of $350,000. Trying to get to reason why he would do this.

I love how we keep hearing every offseason that we have no cap room, yet we are well below the camp at this point and are clearing more room. Hope we use some of that room to actually, you know, help the team by signing a RT, TE or S.

Nice. Bonus money to use to bring in a vet to fill out our roster late in camp.

It states the logical reasoning right in the article :

#1 His 2.5mil is now guaranteed.
#2 If he does retain the role he played last season, he will still make the same he would have.

    Tanny Magic as usual...

It's likely that it was a take a pay cut or get cut situation, much like the Kellen Clemens one from hard knocks, and he took more bonus up front but less over all. The writing is on the wall for DeVito. They have taken players at his position in our base defense in the first round of the last two drafts. He knows that he'll be a backup / rotational guy here.

Good glad he's still on board. He's a perfect/great backup and serviceable starter on our line.

He got a ton of bonus/ signing bonus so good for him, we lowered his cap hit so good for us.

Now let's see how we handle the Keller situation.

Yeah, the Star Ledger article is a lot more in depth. It wasn't posted yet when I originally saw the little blurb from Brian Costello.

I'm glad to hear he won't get cut, but I really will be disappointed if we lose DeVito after the season. We need to have him here. He's a really, really good player that adds to our DL depth.

I knew there was no way we were getting rid of Devito. The guy is a valuable player and at that salery he doesn't break the bank.

Retaining him was a no brainier.

Please use this extra money on a RT when one becomes available. If we still have some fluff left over start looking for a S. Then let get to work in camp and see what we got. Im excited. Go Jets

Definitely. Lots of cap space at the moment by the looks of it. Definitely can sign a few cheap vets to fill some holes.

I don't know. I'm not sold that available or might be available RT, TE or S would be any better than what we have. Whats the chances Antonio Gates or Hernandez gets released?

I'd rather they keep the money in the bank and "pay it forward" to next year's SC like they did this year in case we need it.

While we could slightly improve each position, I don't think squandering the cap space on a marginally better player is worthwhile. I'd rather save the cap room to pick up a big upgrade at those or another position next season.

Do you really think Wayne Hunter is the answer in this new offensive scheme they are talking about.. Did you watch the games last year where he was getting pushed around like a rag dog and getting Sanchez killed back there.. YOU think saving money for next year is a good idea,, NOT ME. If one is cut I say we get him who ever it is CAUSE HUNTER STINKS.. then save some money.. But damn it get a RT for Marks sake.

Agreed. If there is someone out there who will be a solid replacement than by all means but if it isn't going to help all that much then just save it for next season.

Agreed. I also like the idea of having as many character players in the locker room as we can. DeVito is great model for younger players to follow.
