Jets signed DE Mike DeVito to a three-year extension through 2012. The guaranteed money isn't known, but DeVito got sizable upgrades in salary over the next three seasons. DeVito, a former undrafted free agent from Maine, is the Jets' top backup at both defensive end positions. He is limited athletically, but a "try-hard" run stopper with decent size at 6'3/298 http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playernews.aspx?sport=NFL&filter_teams=NYJ
I like DeVito. He gives good depth at DE position and may one day even take over Shaun Ellis once he's gone. He's only 25 so he should show more progress along the way. I've always thought he is better than Sione Pouha, who's 30.
Yep. I thought we were going to get a good look at his potential as a starter this week, but apparently that's not going to happen.
Which is why I'm a bit curious about why this happened now. Shouldn't they get a good look at him in a starting role before committing to him? I mean, our "top backup" isn't there to back up our top end.
Maybe he's still a little banged up? Didn't he miss the last couple of preseason games with a hamstring?
Reports are saying he is out Sunday, which would have been his chance to show himself as a starter in while Ellis serves his suspension. Yup, his hamstring.
I was really concerned about our DL depth coming into this season. Part of that concern was I wasn't sure if DeVito was a guy that was on the fringe of being cut. Also, all of our guys (except DeVito were north of 30yrs old). Based on what RR has said about him and the fact that I've watched him closely in games, I have been impressed. He is stout at the point and is excellent at shedding blocks to make the play. Maybe he can become a Kimo von Oelhoffen/Aaron Smith type (read: nothing spectacular but a solid, reliable contributor).
Please share your sources. Everything I've read says he will give it a go. Will probably be listed as questionable. In fact, just read he practiced full today (Wednesday) and should be good to go.
Ridiculous. They can workout a backups contract but not Leon's. He is arguably our most important piece this year and still no sign of a new deal.
You don't think Leon is 5-6 Million a year. He had the most combined yards in the league last year and is only getting better. Not to mention team MVP and Young. They offered 4.5 already, so they're close.
It's always easier to negotiate when both sides don't think that their shit doesn't stink. If you were running out of a burning building, would you take the little time needed to pick up a puppy as you were running by?
