Mangini is thinking about bringing him in to play next to Vilma in the 3-4.

I looked him up and he's had 100+ tackles for the past 5 seasons with the 49ers. He's in his 30s, so I don't know how big his contract will be, but I think this will be a good sign.

I agree, bring him in, maybe get a big outside hybrid guy for the 3-4 and we are set, well set only if we get that monster NT that has been elusive to us. We are definatly gonna need a good rush this year if we have Barrett and Miller starting with no FA help

Smith would also give leadership to a relatively young defense which we do need

I would rather hobson next to Vilma inside in a 3-4. Vilma and Ellis provide enough leadership

I'm pretty sure Derek Smith will be better inside than Hobson. That's just my opinion though...

He might be better but Hobson is cheaper and has more potential because at Smith's age he won't get much better, where as Hobson is entering his prime. Hobson and Vilma inside is a great combo it's OLB that concerns me.

Derek Smith could come in and automatically be a force in the middle next to Vilma. I know we are rebuilding, but I think that Derek Smith can be a good player on this defense for at least 4 more years. I don't know if Mangini wants to sit and wait for Hobson to develop/not develop into a good ILB.

I would like this signing. Derek Smith is a very good players and good bring a lot to this Defense and would fit in great in the 3-4.

I am glad Mangini is willing to go after Vets even though we are rebuilding.

Hopefully this will lead to a few more wins next year.

I also would like to sign Willie Mcginest. I think we would have a really good shot at getting him because hes played under Mangini in New England.

He is old and probably would want a fairly big contract...those are the kind of contracts that have killed us in the past...

Right on brotha right on. If i had to choose between Smith or Mcginest id think id take Mcginest since he played under Mangini and all and hes familar with the system. But id be happy if we got either player. Id just prefer Mcginest but i wouldnt be mad if we got Smith and not him. Either way we cant go wrong between those 2.

How do you know Mangini is looking at him?

we never said he was looking at him... as of now he is still with the Pats, this is all speculation.
If McGinest is a cap casualty, all i was saying is the Jets may be a leading contender to land him because of the relationship with Mangini
