A week earlier he was a close 2nd in a players vote about which players you'd like to build a team around. Shouls I start a new thread for that one?

You can if you want...no one's stopping you.

Jeter is overrated in my opinion and 10% of the player's that were asked that question agree with me.

Jeter's a great player to build a team around:

    1. He's been to the World Series, and won.
    2. He's got great character.
    3. He's a leader.

    ...but his game is overrated.

Really? You thought by calling Derek Jeter overrated you were in some sort of small minority?

People have called him overrated for years. Nothing new. The noteworthy part is that A-Rod is 3rd. I guess it can only be jealousy from his peers over the contract.

What a joke. Jeter is one of the best players of this generation, maybe the best.

You can't be overrated when you're one of the most CLUTCH hitters of all-time. He's going to be the 1st Yankee with 3,000 hits, he's going to the Hall of Fame...

I guess when you bang 10 of the Top 100 Maxim chicks you get jealousy from peers.

That is possibly the dumbest statement that I have ever seen.

...and I am a Mets fan.

The only thing Jeter is overrated for is his defense

I really couldn't care less whether people think he is overrated or not, but I would point out that the two SI polls are in fact completely consistent with each other. If you are someone who doesn't think that Jeter is that great a player any more (and I think "any more" is the key - no one would have said this 8 years ago), yet you see an appreciable number of your peers saying he is the first player they would build a team around, by definition you would think that he is being vastly overrated by those people.

Three of the top four players in the "build a team around" poll are in the top five of the "most overrated" poll, which is exactly what you would expect to happen. To be honest, I find David Wright being tied for 5th in the most overrated poll far more laughable, since there is no team in major league baseball who wouldn't want on their team a 25-year-old who is a perennial .300 BA, 25 HR, 100 RBI, .380 OBP, .530 SLG player who is also a good citizen. Even if you don't think that he is the best young player in baseball, how can he possibly be the most overrated?

This year he's certainly overPAID, by a lot, but I don't think he's overrated. He is in decline now, but he has been a very good player for a long time. I wouldn't put him top ten of the generation though (in no order): Manny, Arod, Pujols, Griffey, Bonds, Helton, Vlad, Thomas, Chipper, Sheffield, maybe more, I'd have to look.

not a surprise, no one on this board can agrue against mlb players,
is jeter overrated? yes, does he suck? far from it, the guy is clutch and knows how to play the game right and win,

but heres a question for all, if you were starting a team right now would you pick jeter? you probaly wouldnt even pick him as your starting ss,

a-rod converted over to 3rd because he could [jeter couldnt] rollins won an mvp, jeter hasnt, reyes [when he's right in the head] is a better all around player than jeter,

dont get me wrong i like jeter, but i dont think he's a 1st ballot hof'er

Jeter was also voted most likely to blast off to Uranus on a rocket ship with Lance Bass.

Overrated has to factor in everything: how much he's payed, the cast he's surrounded by, how good he is now, how good he was in his prime, etc.

Jeter makes more money than he's worth now and he has a good supporting cast behind him in the lineup (arod, cano, giambi, abreu, the list goes on and on) he isn't amazing anymore but he's still great and extremely clutch, and in his prime there was no better shortstop. So, he may be overrated...doesn't mean he isn't one of the best shortstops to ever lace up ever. I'd take him any day if I didn't have Jose Reyes.

he plays mediocre defense with a stellar web gem per year that sticks out in people minds. Its true that his defense is overrated, but the man is clutch beyond belief, and has a fist full of rings. Overrate that....

Derek Jeter is going to overrate himself all the way to 3000 career hits and the hall-of-fame.

which is exactly what I just said, the only thing overrated about him is his defense, his stellar web gem a year can be partial thanks to his lack of range.

jeter gets a lot of hype because he has four rings,

the positives about jeter, clutch, team player, consistent, good base stealer, b.a, on base %,

negatives, power, range, doesnt steal a lot of bases, never led the al in any major catergory,

but those 4 rings and the play he made [on the overthrow to home] against the A's and giambi, is what makes legends,

i cant put him up there, w/ruth, dimagio, mantle, gherig, jackson e.c.t, imho
