After last game here are the Jets latest defensive rankings:

    Total YPG: 10th
    Passing yards: 4th
    Rushing yards: 29th
    PPG: 22nd

Crazy how one game boosts up our stats like that and it should only get better with the remaining teams we play. We could actually jump back up to top 5 without Revis. I'm guessing still no Jones-Drew this weekend for the Jags. They will be forced to pass, and we can exploit that, even though Henne has played decent. Last year with Revis we finished 5th in passing YPG, and we're ahead of that now. Our rushing D has only improved a tiny bit. We still need to address our linebackers and PPG is so high despite the low yardage largely because of offensive turnovers.

Offensive rankings of remaining teams on schedule:

    Jacksonville: 31st
    Tennessee: 23rd
    San Diego: 26th
    Buffalo: 16th

Believe it or not, Buffalo is the best offensive team we still have to face. Things are looking pretty good for the D. They are definitely the bright spot of this team, especially passing D. If we can keep Landry, lock up Revis, and draft an early OLB, we're going to be in very good shape next year. I'm loving the youth on the D line, they will only get better, especially Wilkerson & Coples. Lets put the Sanchez banter on hold and talk about the bright spots on our team. I LOVE this defense. They are much more exciting to watch than any other unit on the team.

Just for fun, I'm going to post some of our higher defensive player fantasy rankings. I know it doesn't say everything, but it is a good way to throw tackles, force fumbles, sacks & ints together into one stat. I'm in a defensive league so I've paid attention. I have Landry & Wilkerson on my team.

Wilkerson. Listed as DT and ranked #1 out of all of them (11 points higher than #2, Justin Smith). As DE he'd be #2 under JJ watt, just above Jason Pierre Paul

Devito - listed as DE and ranks 21st (27th if you include all DEs and DTs)

Laron Landry - #4 out of the safeties

Bell - #14 out of the safeties

David Harris - #21 amongst Linebackers

So how about Wilkerson having a BEAST MODE season? #2 out of all DTs and DEs is pretty friggin good for a 2nd year player. This guy is going to be a difference maker for years to come. I honestly didn't realize he was ranked that high until recently, so I had to post this. Yeah, I know fantasy doesn't determine everything, but the #s do come from making plays. Fuck yeah! How can they say Rex can't draft when he picked up this monster?

I'm so excited for this defense. It's what keeps me watching every week, and what enticed me to follow this team a few years ago. I also think that they're just short of 1 or 2 OLBs (or pass rushing DEs if they decide to go to 4-3 next season) away from being the scariest D in the league.

that depends on a healthy revis....but u have a point.

funny thing - we have been 1-2 OLB's away from a scary defense for years now.

without looking at stats the passing yard stat is a bit misleading. teams have not had to throw on us to be successful. other teams have scored against the jets in multiple ways - not just throwing the ball.

the most telling stat is the rushing yards - clearly a function of poor linebacker play, lack of perimeter speed, and overall youth along the d-line.

Except our youngest starter along the d line grades out highest against the run of all our d linemen. THe rush D is a combination of poor linebacker play and Pouha not being healthy enough to produce like last year. Rex continues to stick with underwhelming vets though, it's mind boggling at this point.

The defense will always be stout under RR/Pettine. The offense should be priority to fix

I know it's hindsight, but it wasn't just Revis not being in the lineup that was an issue. The Jets also needed to readjust their defensive sets, and that may have been the culprit in their problems, along with Pouha and DeVito being hurt here and there.

It makes sense since the whole idea of man coverage is to allow the rest of the D to have more flexibility, including playing up against the run. It's no wonder that took some doing, and perhaps now the Jet D has finally settled on a way to deal with Revis being out.

    It's a theory.

We should see the numbers adjusted by the competition. Rex's defenses, with the exception of 2009, have been small against elite teams and great against the teams that weren't particularly good on offense anyway. His defenses, again with the exception of 2009, have feasted on bad QB's and young QB's and been very meh against the good QB's and the strong ground games.

I'm not sold on Rex's defenses at this point. I've seen them turn into leaky sieves too often when the game was on the line. I think Herm's cover-2 defenses made more stands late than Rex's have.

29th against the rush and routinely getting blown out by good competition have me ho-hum about this defense.

The defense has been great all year playing with amazing effort. But eventually offensive TO's and so many 3 and outs have caused them to crack each game. They have been left on the field all game long and been forced to play perfect. If the Jets had a mediocre to bad QB this year who could give them less TO's and few less 3 and outs the D would be top 5 right now even without Revis. They have really come to play this year. Despite all the struggles this year the D's effort has been very nice to see.

I can not be excited about this. Nor do I agree that the defense has been good. Safety play is much better than before, cromartie has been amazing and wilkerson seems tobe developing nicely.

I don't thinkwe have played well ona whole, wilson is terrible, all our. Startinglinebackers need to go, and we haven't been able to develop any pass rush in 4 years. This season has been the worst as far as qb pressure. This game jumping the numbers I'm not suprised. The only qb worse than sanchez was lindy.

I think there's something else a lot of people haven't noticed. Our defense has, every single game, been outstanding. There was very few games where they gave up tons of points or yards, and when they did, it was the games where the offense couldn't buy a point and the defense just said "Fuck it, the offense isn't play, why should we?" The defense let up and that's when other teams padded stats.

Summary: Our defense, when trying, is a top 5 defense.

Routinely blown out? It happened 4 out of 12 games, and all of them involved multiple turnovers and most had defensive/ST TDs from the other teams. The fact that we're top 10 with all of the injuries, turnovers, and other issues (slow linebackers) speaks volumes. Only one team this year has put more than 28 on our defense, and that was the Patriots where we had like a million turnovers.

our defense don't make big plays. where's the clutch turnover and pick 6's? this is not a playmaking defense, it's a good prevent one.

The defense has always been the bright spot of this team,Early on we gave up some big plays but that hasn't happend alot since llike week 4 or 5. Yea we had some blown coverages in the Thanksgiving game but it was scoreless after 1 until the 52 seconds with all the fumbles happend, Witch had zero to do with the defense

Defense has always been good. This isn't Rex best defense since he's been here but he's still done some pretty amazing things.

    Just think of the following:
    - Revis gone
    - Kyle CB#2, random guy struggling to be in NFL = CB#3
    - Slow ass LB core
    - Most promising players (like Wilk) are really young & inexperienced coming into this season.
    - Maybin turned out to be a one-year wonder & fizzled out this season

Rex hasn't built a D comparable to those Bear & Ravens championship teams but his defenses have always been really good. Considering this year's D is constantly rushing onto the field @ unexpected moments from the constant turnovers, they've more than held their own.

Our defense years 1 and 2 were championship quality, And if we had a good offense that could control the clock it would give our defense the motivation to rise up and be better. This defense is 3 or 4 players away and having Revis back from being a number 1 defense again.

The D played very well @NE and vs HOU. Those are good offenses.
