The news breaking tonight has made my eyes pop a bit. Deebo is just 26 years old, a true WR1, and has all kinds of familiarity with Saleh/LaFleur. Apparently he's somewhere between not wanting to re-sign with the Niners and straight up asking out. Tons of smoke in the last few hours, from Schefter saying he's mad to Samuel's own brother saying he's seeking a trade:
On the other hand if SF gets frustrated and really wants to punish him a trade to the Jets would be all of that.
Check these pre draft scouting reports on them both. I used the same source to limit the variables: https://www.nfl.com/prospects/a.j.-brown/32004252-4f41-3223-e4c5-1e30dffa87f8 https://www.nfl.com/prospects/deebo-samuel/32005341-4d63-6097-eab1-34810e00be67 I honestly haven't watched either play, but they've both proven themselves as good WRs. Simply based on the above profiles, Brown seems to have the physical traits that make him a great fit for the LaFleur offense, OTOH Deebo has actually played in that offense and succeeded. I prefer Brown, but would be happy with either for the right price.
I read some speculation that Deebo might not want to negotiate with the 49ers until after Metcalf and/or Brown sign. Essentially, what he is doing now might be posturing indifference while he delays hoping Metcalf or Brown drive the market even higher.
I saw a video in which Deebo addressed the fact that he has received death threats and racial remarks from SF fans since the trade rumors began. People are weird. There's also several stories claiming that SF is ready, willing, and able to pay Deebo what he wants, but Deebo is dragging his feet. It's probably just a negotiating tactic. But there is at least a non-zero chance that he is interested in going to a team like the Jets that (a) has an HC and OC that he knows and loves, (b) is desperate for a WR like him and will mortgage the farm to get him, and (c) has a fan base that hasn't been threatening to kill him lately. Oh yeah, and the city of SF has become a sewer lately, so there's that.
SF is a shit town. Anyways Deebo or AJ, come on over baby! If not, I hope we go with a home run pick at #10 and take Jameson
Yup. We can all debate whether we would prefer Deebo, AJ, or the #10 pick, but these are definitely first world problems. They are all good solutions.
I wouldn’t get too excited yet. SF is a little hamstrung with Garoppolo’s contract but it’s just temporary. They have Lance on his cheap deal as the future starter so they can pay Samuel and Bosa, while keeping Williams, Armstead, and Warner as their core. They let some other luxury players go, like Tomlinson and Jones but they won’t be shipping out their stars. Im not sure what the play is, it could be SF applying pressure to get a deal done before Brown, McLaurin, and/or Metcalf continue to push the market up.
i truly think they want to get a deal done before DK and Terry drive up that cost. Maybe there’s a bit of uncertainty with Lance as the future as a small part. But if there’s a way to bring Deebo here, you go do it.
Because of our ties to SF wouldn’t that turn us off from Deebo if he’s acting like a diva? There has to be a reason he’s not willing to sign an extension and if any other team would know it’s probably us.
If he's such a diva that it outweighs his strengths, I'm sure Saleh knows that and JD will pass. But the fact that he's not signing an extension doesn't necessarily mean he's a diva. Maybe he has legit reasons why he would prefer to play elsewhere. SF is a terrible city, so that wouldn't be surprising. Or maybe he wants to play for Saleh.
