From John Clayton ESPN Traveling party: The new Jets front office isn't lazy, that's for sure. Coach Eric Mangini, general manager Mike Tannenbaum and owner Woody Johnson have been flying around visiting top picks in the draft. They have added another little twist. On Thursday night, they had a retired player visit with left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson to evaluate how he will psychologically fit in the NFL. Mangini wants smart players who love the game, and the organization will be exhaustive in trying to investigate those traits. Most believe Ferguson will pass any of those test with flying colors. http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=2416685&name=clayton_john&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fespn%2fblog%2findex%3fentryID%3d2416685%26name%3dclayton_john
I saw this as well, on KFFL. Man, ESPN insider has all the info!!! Although KFFL most likely got it from ESPN, it is still public knowledge!!!! We'll be lucky if D'Brick lasts to the 4th pick.
This kind of info makes me think, they are drafting this guy. How often do you hear this kind of stuff?(third Jets visit with this guy) I understand sending a coach but an ex NFL player?
I hope the Saints take him, then we can get Mario. Brick may be a good nfl tackle, but right now he doesn't project to be an all around great lineman. I do love that he is a black belt and he has amazing feet for a guy that size. The question is he will have that nasty demeanor in the running game to just get off that line and destroy people the way Walter Jones, Orlando Pace and Jonathon Ogden do. If they don't project him to be an all around great tackle then I would pass.
Bite your tongue... Taking Mario Williams would be a nightmare. We need offense, for starters, and we do not need a 4-3 end (every draft guy you hear on TV says he's not suited for the 3-4, so please spare me the argument. I know they aren't perfect, but some internet poster isn't any better).. Why trade Abraham for #29 if you want to pay another DE the same kind of cash?
So Abraham, at 265 lbs wet, would have been a better 3-4 end than Mario will be at 295 lbs? I don't get your argument. How big do you have to be to play 3-4 end in your estimation (or in the opinion of the TV experts)? 320 lbs? If that's the case, we need to move DRob out to end in the 3-4, so Abraham really had no future with the team unless you were convinced he could be a ROLB. And if that was the case, why would we be willing to pay him top-end DE money? I agree we need offense. I'm not opposed to drafting D'Brick, and I really hope we address O-line early and often in this draft. But at #4, you have to take the BPA and I haven't heard anyone say that d'Brick is more talented than Mario when both are playing up to their ability.
Why? Because mario is bigger, stronger and faster and plays the run better than abraham, that's why. Wouldn't you trade dewanye robertson for marcus stroud? That is the player we are getting with mario, and if we want to go back to being ranked 12th on defense or higher we need mario.
From what I've seen so far the best DE for a 34 D would be Kamerion Wimbley and may be available at 29. JetsIn2004 actually made a really good point about the $ situation , why take another UNTRIED DE and pay him the same money?
