I still wonder, is this guy EVER going to be more than average as a LT? Looking back at the 2006 draft today thanks to CNN.SI Don Banks about Reggie Bush... ...I did want to trade down and in retrospect... 5. AJ Hawk is a stud in Green Bay 6. Vernon Davis - limited by the 49er QB problems 7. Michael Huff - pro bowl caliber S 8. Donte Whitner - 72 tackle starting S 9. Ernie Sims - over 100 tackles as a rookie and this year OLB 10. Matt Leinart - glad we passed on him 11. Jay Cutler 12. Haloti Ngata - did you see what a stud he is against New England!?!?!? 13. Kamerion Wimbley - you'll see plenty of him on Sunday 21. Lawrence Maroney 29. Nick Mangold - a better C than D'Brick is a LT - pro bowl future 2/33. DeMarco Ryans - D Rookie of the Year, 2nd straight 100 tackle season 2/47. Daryn Colledge - a key starter at G for GB 2/50. Marcus McNeil - 2nd year starting RT for San Diego - 2/55. Andre Whitworth - has started at LT and LG for Bengals
None of the above-mentioned players are starting quality left tackles. We need one, and it was presumably a high priority due to the fact that the entire season hinged on the health of Chad "the egg" Pennington. Not only did we take the best player available based on need, but the consensus pick at our spot. He has shown flashes of brilliance and I believe his troubles this year are directly related to the lack of a quality starting guard at his side. Couple that with the fact that most LTs take 3 solid years to mature. Considering he was lights out in his rookie year, I think we got what we paid for.
Yeah! Let's play the hingsight game. What exactly is your point? Should we have taken those players over Brick?...is that what you are saying? Not saying those players aren't good, but... Vernon Davis has been limited due to injury, not necessarily the QB Most people on this site (and around the NFL) laughed at the Bills for "reaching" for Whitner Ngata was projected as a 4/3 DT (hence his draft position), but has excelled on the edge for Baltimore. As for the second rounders...every team at least passed on them once. McNeil is starting at LT and has regressed after his pro bowl rookie season.
Hindsight is always 20/20. I really wanted to slide back and get Cutler or Ngata. The problem was we desperately needed a LT.
I agree with ya. Brick was an absolute no brainer for the front office on draft day 2006. We had no left tackle. The top left tackle happended to be the highest rated player at #4. Easy choice. Sure in hind sight McNeil has looked good, but had back problems leading up to the draft and was a suspcet prospect becasue of it. As far as trading down goes, you need a partner to dance with on that one. No one will ever really know if they even had the chance to move out for decent draft value. As it is the filled a big need with the best prospect available. Look back on it as much as we want, it was an easy decision that day.
What do you mean EVER? He already is. You don't know this yet? That's bad man.... Think of what the word "average" means and re-evaluate your thread. Then give us all a break.
Notice how he used the "limited by QB" excuse on Vernon Davis, who has been "average". I know he was injured last season, but not anymore. D'brick is "limited" because we have garbage playing at right tackle and guard.
Lights out? What games did you watch? He got eaten up his rookie year by the Better DE's in the league and Chad was running for his life because of it. Also, I love how people say Kendall wasn't worth it but then use it as an excuse for Brick. the LG helps but it's not a crutch, he gets beat on his own. Has he improved ? Yes. Do I buy into this 3 year theory because of Pro Bowl selections? NOPE. I DID not like spending a high pick for a "Project" or a "Needs work" guy. If you go LT In the top 5 he should be a top 5 in the league (Theoretically) or someone who steps right in. He was/is neither. Does that make him a bust? No, not at all but please stop saying this guy is or was lights out cause that is just BS.
It was a total need pick. It was not a bust by any means. With the OL condition being the way it was thanks to BRADWAY, the pick was made for us (instead of us making the pick). Please dont forget that we had Adrian Jones watching the back of a very physically delicate QB. Watching the RAVENS-PATS game was torture for me because I remember yelling at the TV in April 2006 for the JETS to grab Dawan Landry (S) in the 3rd or 4th rounds, but Baltimore grabbed him in the 5th. I saw a vicious, mean, hitting machine on MNF talking to Moss & Welker all game & letting them know what would happen if they tried coming over the middle to catch a pass. But ultimately we felt that Eric Smith was a better value in the 3rd round because of his great character & leadership qualities. Nevermind the fact that he barely has enough speed to cover his own area. Can add him to the Jon McGraw, Scott Frost list of JET safeties who we've wasted low round draft picks on & just arent fast enough to play football.
We Shoulda Got Tom Brady In The 2000 Draft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've dertmined there are just certain Jet fans that will NEVER be satisfied w/ who we take in the first round of a draft.
I think his nickname is actually The Hitman...but either works. I just don't like our top rookie to remind me of Frank Thomas.
It is so easy to look back at a draft and say would coulda shoulda. In fact, most people on this board were pleading for the Jets to do whatever it took to trade UP for Bush or Young. As it stands, Bush is a bust - he is too small and tentative to run between the tackles or carry the ball 20+ times a game and Young is well on his way to becoming another athletic running QB who can't pass in the NFL. People were also pushing for Leinart, who has not impressed. Cutler was also high on people's lists, but while he has a strong arm, the Broncos were a winning team with Plummer and have been a losing team with Cutler with the same personnel. It is too early to tell with Cutler, but it is no slam dunk that he will be any more than a good QB, just like it Brick may not be more than a good LT. By the way, look at these draft stats from ESPN's Simmons: Of the 20 players selected in the top four of the NFL draft from 1998 to 2002, a whopping 10 of them are already out of the league, including three No. 1s (Courtney Brown, Michael Vick, Tim Couch), two No. 2s (Charles Rogers, LaVar Arrington, Ryan Leaf), two No. 3s (Andre Wadsworth, Akili Smith) and two No. 4s (Peter Warrick, Mike Williams). Three more top-four picks from that era (David Carr, Joey Harrington and Gerard Warren) were major disappointments and should be joining them soon. Even stranger, the other seven top-four picks ended up succeeding and making a ton of money for themselves: Peyton Manning, Charles Woodson, Donovan McNabb, Edge James, Leonard Davis, Justin Smith and Julius Peppers. Can you get more hit-or-miss than that? And how could a top-four pick be that hit-or-miss for five solid years? I just thought that was crazy.
The second paragraph is very interesting. if that is the case, it would seem easier to drop down into the middle of the 1st round and draft that "no-shit" pick that everyone knows will be good at the least, but will he truly be a great player. (i.e Shockey, Haynesworth, Marcus Spears, Polamalu, Revis, Derrick Johnson, Ngata, etc.)-- all post-12 pick players. All became exceptional ballplayers. Safe picks are the best way to go.
Other versions of the hindsight game: Vernon Davis- limited by his inability to develop proper route running skills, flourished in college due to his athleticism but at the detriment of his ability Donte Whitner - 72 tackles missed by the DL and LBs playing in front of him Lawrence Maroney - There wouldn't be so much speculation about the Patriots taking McFadden if Maroney was becomming the back he was expected to be.
what team have you been watching??? if you think his play was lights out, i've got a bridge to sell you, because you don't know avything about football!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
