SAN DIEGO (AP) — David Wells is finished with his hometown San Diego Padres, and it's possible that baseball has seen the last of the boisterous left-hander known as Boomer.

General manager Kevin Towers said Wednesday that the Padres will cut ties with the struggling 44-year-old on Thursday in order to activate All-Star Chris Young from the disabled list.

Towers and manager Bud Black told Wells on Tuesday night that he wouldn't be making his scheduled start Saturday in Cincinnati. They gave him two options for his departure.

"If he still wants to play, we'll designate him for assignment and see if other clubs have interest, or if he wants to hang them up, he can retire," Towers told The Associated Press by phone. "We're waiting for him to get back to us."

ST. LOUIS -- David Wells might have made his last pitch for the Padres, but that doesn't mean the 44-year-old left-handed pitcher has decided to embrace the notion of retirement.

"He absolutely wants to pitch," said Wells' agent, Gregg Clifton. "I have heard rumors some teams might be interested in him down the stretch. It would have to be the right place and the right situation, but he still thinks he can get people out."

The Padres, however, don't share that sentiment, which is why on Thursday they will designate Wells for assignment when they active All-Star pitcher Chris Young off of the disabled list to start against the Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

The team also expects to request unconditional release waivers on the San Diego native, meaning that he could become a free agent quicker than the normal 10-day period that players who are designated for assignment have.

Wells was 5-8 with a 5.54 ERA in 22 starts for the Padres this season, but had struggled in recent weeks, posting a 14.04 ERA over his last four starts. On Monday in what would be Wells' last start, he allowed the first seven batters to reach base in a 10-run fifth inning.

Another factor that contributed to Wells' departure was the number of short starts that he had. He pitched into the sixth inning just once in his last five starts.

as you might've noticed, LA picked up Wells and they're starting him on Sunday Night Baseball against the Mets.
