David Irons: ROTY

David Irons might not be the best player in the draft, but he's hands down the best trash talker. And he's funny too.

From another Board, I give you the Trash Talking Rookie of the Year:

The other day, I gave you five reasons I liked the signing of Eric Steinbach.

Today, I gave you some reasons I hope the Browns draft Auburn cornerback David Irons -- and few have anything to do with the way Irons plays the game.

Irons might not get drafted until the second day, but he's already a first-ballot Hall of Famer when it comes to trash talk and comedy. I found out first hand at the Senior Bowl when I spent time with David and his brother, Kenny (a running back who will likely be picked on the first day), for a down-the-road feature story.

I really had no idea what I was getting into. And my only regret is not being able to share this blog earlier, before David had a chance to address the media at the NFL Scouting Combine and deliver these gems?

**On their high school days, when David was -- at least according to David -- the better running back: "Oh, yes. I was 10 times better. He was my fullback in high school, he?d block for me. I?d tell him to just go block, tell him to scare the opposing teams with his face. I'd just tell him don?t wear a visor or nothing. Just go there, wear a clear visor or don?t wear a visor at all. They look at the face, they move out of the way, we win the game. The days he wore the visor and he didn?t show his face, that?s the games we lost."

I asked both Irons Brothers at the Senior Bowl which one was better looking; naturally, each voted for himself. But David had more to say at the combine.

"He was my blocking back. We had what was called the ugly sweep. Ugly sweep on the right and ugly sweep to the left. That?s when he doesn?t (wear) his visor and tries to look all pretty and he scares opponents away and I?m down the sideline for touchdowns. At the end of the game I?m sitting in the fourth quarter and we just let him in the game so he can feel good about his self."

**On Kenny's overall look: "He thinks he?s a baby James Brown. You should?ve seen this caramel suit he had on yesterday at the restaurant. Looked like a big coffee jar."

**On the chances the Irons Brothers land on the same NFL team: "I?ve been with him forever, all my life. I told him it?s time to divorce, sign the papers over in divorce court. You can?t play like that. I see that guy every day. I can?t even go to scary movies because I see him every day. I told him he needed to get with Steven Spielberg and make one of the scariest movies out there. On Halloween, I can?t go trick-or-treating without him bringing his own self to be his costume."

**At the Senior Bowl, David told me "the only way I'd be happy with us being on the same team is if some team had two first-round picks and drafted both of us in the first round. If that happens, that's different.

"I would love to be in the same division as Kenny. I'd love to hit him twice a year. That would be awesome."

**David Irons, obviously, is sharp and quick-witted. He's pretty quick on the field, too -- he ran a 4.44 in the 40-yard dash at the combine. That, along with a strong Senior Bowl performance, should help his stock.

He certainly doesn't lack confidence. He wrote "Jim Thorpe" on the t-shirt he wore under his pads last fall, letting it be known that winning the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's best defensive back was his goal. He didn't, but that hasn't slowed him down.

**He told an ESPN.com blogger last fall that he once told LSU receiver Dwayne Bowe during a game, "I'm a grown man out here. You're my little son. You're so little I can't even beat you up."

Bowe, a probable first-rounder, is almost 6-foot-3 and 221 pounds. Irons is 5-foot-10 and 190 soaking wet.

**David said his brother is a productive runner because of his footwork, his vision and his work ethic. But when I asked David what he liked best about Kenny as a football player, he said, "He'll talk. Not as good as me, but he'll talk."

**I leave you with David's favorite story of one-upping his brother in the talking department, shared at the Senior Bowl.

"One time I called and told Kenny that (all of our friends) were at the movie theater," David said. "I told him we were all waiting on him. I said, "We?re at the theater in Marietta (Georgia), and we're all waiting on you. Come on, get down here."

So Kenny got in the car, headed the 44 miles from their hometown of Dacula to Marietta, and?

"I was downstairs in the basement the whole time. And he drove all the way to Marietta. He called me back and wondered where we were. It was good."

Kid's got spirit, I like it, sign him up. He's not that bad of a corner either, I'd give him a shot in Rd 3.

I've seen David play in a bunch of ball games, he has a lot of talent and he's always around the ball but he's got stone hands. I wouldn't mind the JETS getting him with one of their second round picks since he moved his stock up with his performance in the Senior Bowl and the Combine but I feel that 6'1 195 CB Fred Bennet will be a better prospect for the JETS than David Irons.
