http://www.newyorkjets.com/team/depth_charts/ I thought this was interesting.... He's also listed as the 3rd RCB, but it seems like his transition to S is all but complete.... If Smith and Elam fail to impress in the first couple weeks of the season, I'd like to see Barrett get a chance to compete for that 2nd S job.... We've filled a lot of holes this offseason, but the 2nd S spot is still a glaring weakness that needs to be improved. If we can find an adequate starter on our own roster, that'd be great news....
I like this move a lot. Barrett just can't cover anyone but he's a good tackler who should do well at safety. I think the Jets will resign Poteat after week one so his contract isn't guaranteed. I think they cut Carroll to make room for him.
Smart move. Barrett can't cover for shit but he is a great last line of defense. I've seen him save many plays from going all the way.
^ That's what I was thinking... He's never been comfortable playing close to the line, as is evidenced by the huge cushions he often gives, and the fact that he gets beat off the line whenever he does play up... He is, however, good in zone coverage down the field, and a very sound tackler... I really hope he can step up and compete for the 2nd spot...
Agreed. He has decent ballhawking skills when he is not being relied on to cover man to man anyway. This should be the best use of his skills.
Carroll sticks around until Miller can play again. He takes care of KR while Miller is hurt. Also Miller will be a nickle/dime CB so I don't know if there's room for Poteat (much as I'd like to have him on the roster). Carroll's roster spot is likely taken by Chatman when he comes back from suspension.
Barret has been practicing for safety his entire life... (10-15 yard cushions). He's going to do great there.
Poteat was cut at the beginning of the offseason and then re-signed and cut again. I don't think they're bringing him back.
This could turn out to be a good move and give Barrett a few more years in the league. There have been quite a few CBs who have sucessfully made the transition to Safety.
