Pro Bowl cornerback has taken on the toughest assignments without hesitation, relishing every opportunity to shut down big-name opponents, while making a name for himself. Last week, Revis held Johnson, a three-time Pro Bowl receiver, to four catches for 35 yards, well below his 98.4-yard average a year ago. But Revis faces an even bigger challenge Sunday against the Patriots: the unenviable task of impeding the 6-4 Moss in the open field. But he said he isn?t worried. "I expect him to be Randy Moss and I?ll be Darrelle Revis," he said Thursday. "It?s going to be a good competition." Forget "good." The Revis-Moss battle will be a premier matchup, testing Moss? height against Revis? quick hands and superior speed. Jets coach Rex Ryan is anxious to see what transpires. "Randy Moss is obviously a great player, great talent, and sometimes as big as he is when he?s covered, he?s still open. It?s a scary thing," Ryan said. "A guy with that kind of size, speed and competitiveness is a lethal combination. But Revis, I think, will be up to the task. He?s as good as there is in this league." But aside from Moss ? who tied a career high with 12 receptions for 141 yards Monday against the Bills ? Revis and Co. also will have to contain Joey Galloway and Wes Welker, one of the best slot receivers around. "That?s a huge task for our secondary," Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine said. But if Revis? performance in Houston is any indication, expect to see good things this weekend. "I thought he did an outstanding job," Pettine said, referring to Revis? coverage on Johnson. " . . . He was up in his face most of the game and he was having fun. You could even see there were times on tape where you could see him smiling. He was out there having a blast and that?s what it?s all about. The challenge was given to him and he took it. He knew how important it was for us. "As a coaching staff, to be able to say ... we can eliminate an Andre Johnson from the game with just one guy and that allows us to free up 10 others to play defense, that?s a heck of an advantage for us to have each week. "Now, we?re not going to put him on an island ... but there are times during a game where you want to do that. And when you have the luxury of a guy like that, it certainly makes your game plan a lot easier." Said cornerback Lito Sheppard: "Revis has been one of the best of the business. I think it will be a good challenge. I think it?s going to be a big challenge for him and a step in the right direction." When Revis entered the league two years ago as a first-round pick from Pitt, he showed so much promise that Jets safety Kerry Rhodes gave him the nickname "Baby Lockdown." He?s matured into one of the best players at his position. "They call me ?Shutdown? now," Revis said, laughing. "I?ve grown up."
The real question is how much NE wants to throw at Revis. They have other receivers. I know it's tough to let your best receiver be covered by a single player, but if guys like Welker are getting open, throw it to them. Not that Moss will not see the ball at all, but I will be somewhat surprised if Belichek gives Revis too many opportunities to make big plays.
Whenever I think of playing the Patriots, there are moments where I fear Welker more than I do Moss. In either case, I like Revis on Moss rather then Welker. Reason being, is that because when Welker catches his typical dump off across the middle of the field, he will be greeted by an angry Bart Scott or David Harris, if of course they don't blitz Brady before hand.
I wouldn't be surprised if we see Donald Strickland lined up with Welker. Strickland has shown to be fast, physical corner that's a sure tackler. We could even put Lito on Welker (who I see a few PI calls being called already due to Welker's double moves) and Lowery on Galloway. I think we can mix and match certain things with the other receivers until we find a formula that works best. I'm not worried about Revis and Moss. He's shutdown Moss before and he will do it again come Sunday.
He's done it before and he can do it again. I'm more concerned about Welker and Watson in their passing game.
i don't think so. welker loves those physical CBs. welker could turn a 10 yard play into a 50 if strickland misses a 'bump.'
ya no kidding. watson especially. though owen daniels didn't show much last week, we've yet to establish a real solution to that TE coverage.
Moss was Revis' assignment in both games last year too and Moss had a total of 5 catches and less than 60 yards in those two games combined.
I would imagine that they will want to test Kerry after his comments - that could mean when he's doubled on Moss. Or it could mean picking him apart with TEs. Either way, even with Moss and Welker, they will have trouble exposing weaknesses in our defense.
Strickland seems like he completely beat Lowery out for the Nickel CB job. He looked great against the Texans. Welker will be the true test if they have Strick manned-up on him. I have a feeling they may be rotating assignments for the CBs in certain situations. We'll probably see Revis cover every one of their wideouts at some point in the game.
He really might just be about the only solution to the Welker problem. Lito had a good game last week, but I just don't think he's capable of shadowing Welker who comes off his breaks at high acceleration. Lito has the tendency to cheat and pull/hold. He will get called for PI's. Lowery could be another solution in short zone, but if they send Welker on a skinny post route, he'll burn Lowery easily. Lowery just isn't that fast. Who else is there? Carroll? Coleman? GOOD GOD NO! ABC = Anyone But Coleman.
I agree. I think they'll rotate Shep/Strick/Lowery on the outside and slot. This will by far be one of the biggest challenges our D will get early in the season. If they can figure this O out, it'll be a tad bit easier to gameplan against the Saints.
Galloway is the key to me..he was invisible in their first game and I hope we don't forget about him now.
I remember sitting in the 3rd row endzone in a game vs the Bills where Bobby Houston #55 caught a player who is small in stature, quick and a menace to the JETS and there was a collision. After the collision Don Bebe was laying on the the turf whith his arm crookedly pointing to the sky because he KNOCKED HIM THE FUK OUT!!! Mr.Harris......Meet Mr.Welker. I wish no Injury but dude, DO NOT CROSS THE MIDDLE OR YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY THE TOLL!!!! and I said this before but to all the people who cried that we had too many DB's, this is exactly why!!
I think we will mix it up alot with revis on Moss most of the time but also on Welker at times with a double on Moss. It will depend more on the situation than trying to ask one guy to shut down another.
