People are nuts to think that Malik Willis is still a fringe first round player. Dynamic runner but he just struggles throwing the ball.

It’s a great year to need defense. I like what I’ve read about the small Arkansas safety Catalon. Going to try to keep an eye on him and catch some of his games the rest of the year. Safety is realistically probably a second round need.

Maybe the Jets should revamp their defense in 2022 the way they revamped their offense in 2021. What if they picked:

    1-Aidan Hutchinson
    1-Nakobe Dean
    2-Ahmad Gardner
    2-Jalen Catalon

They'd still have a 3rd and two 4ths to add a TE and IOL etc

I’m not sure how to feel about Dean yet. He and that defense are sick, but he also has probably the best player in CFB keeping blockers off him in Jordan Davis. I’m going to watch Georgia/Tennessee closely this week to see what I think. I hate first round defensive tackles, but Davis might be an exception. He’s a monster and will get Heisman votes. He’d be awesome next to Quinnen. Cool story and good kid too unlike his scumbag teammate Adam Anderson.

Love Ahmad Gardner. Going to be some boom or bust with him early in his career while gambling on interceptions but he has all the skills you want. Hutchinson as well. I’m conflicted as to if I like him or Karlaftis more. Karlaftis might be slightly more complete.

The dominance of Vita Vea has made me consider Davis as well. You could skip LB early and go Hutchinson or Karlaftis and the double down on DL with Jordan Davis. I don't hate that.

You could still potentially get Gardner, and Catalon as well.

I think one DL is enough. We have solid players, but not a game changer at edge rusher, which is were I'd go Hutchinson or Karlaftis.

As for Gardner, I don't see CB being a day 1 priority. The scheme used by the CS relies more on pressure from the DL than coverage by the secondary.

I don’t mean to isolate you but I’ve heard this so much and it sounds so ridiculous. Everyone’s dream scheme in the NFL relies on front four pressure. It just doesn’t always happen.

I do agree that we probably don’t need a corner that badly and can add a mid-tier veteran in free agency. I’m way more concerned with what’s going on in the box and at safety then I am at corner.

I prefer balance and wouldn't hesitate to take Stingley if the top pass rushers are off the board and he's still available. Hall is becoming a fine player on one side.

Hamilton, the ND safety, looks intriguing. Wouldn't mind if he and Hutchinson/Karlaftis are the round 1 picks.

Gardner may go very early day 2 with the quality of the CB’s in this class.

I would be ok with 2 DL but the only thing about Davis is that he has played a very low snap percentage in 2021. Depends on who is available.

Hamilton may well go top 3-5, I don’t want to pay that price. I’d rather go Hutchinson and then Dean in the middle of the 1st. It’s also a deep Safety class

I like Hutchinson and would be happy with him. Dean is a great prospect, but basically a 225 lb. run-stopper, and not great in coverage. I'm not taking a LB in the first round who isn't equally adept in coverage and versus the run. I'd rather take an OL (C or RT) there. I also don't think we need to draft a CB high in the draft. I think we should sign a FA CB. I don't know anything about Catalon, but would be fine with taking a S in the 2nd. I think the other 2nd rounder should hopefully be a TE, OG or maybe a LB.

I don't think I'd want Karlaftis. He is supposedly stiff in the hips and ankles and not bendy, so I'm not sure he'd add a whole lot as a pass rusher. S isn't a prime position and imo Hamilton shouldn't even be a consideration. We need to learn from the mistake of taking Adams that high. The only way I'd want Davis is if he fell to the 2nd round, and then only if we don't re-sign Fatukasi, which I hope we do. No way, I'm drafting yet another DT in the 1st round any time soon.

It does look like a deep class at positions of need (OG, safety, CB) and want (DL). So it should be a win all around.

Huh? I have a friend that’s watched Dean a ton (he has a friend that was on the Georgia coaching staff as well) and was just telling me Thursday that Dean excels against the pass in coverage and his weakness is when he get bodied by big guards. What exactly are you basing this definitive statement on?

I don’t ever love the idea of taking a safety that high. But if there was ever one I’d take in the top 10 it’s Hamilton because his coverage instincts lead to interceptions. He has Ed Reed written all over him. The amount of ground Hamilton can make up is unbelievable.

Even still, I’m apprehensive as you are about a safety that high with premium edge rushers available.

Edit: @MaximusD163 - watching Hutchinson on every play today and he’s the real deal. Maybe it’s because he’s white and wears 97 but he reminds me a lot of Nick Bosa. He doesn’t have the first step or snap anticipation that Bosa has but his hand skills to disengage is fucking phenomenal. Looks like he will need to learn that not every play is a 3rd and 15 pass rush situation because he goes very wide on most downs but I like what I’m seeing. Harbaugh and friends also might be telling him to play like that because they stop the run so well as it is though.

All this defensive talk is fun but the Jets draft starts with Tyler Linderbaum

I think two defenders and two offensive players seem reasonable in the first four. The edge rushers that will be available in the top ten are all guys that should have multiple double digit sack years on their rookie deals. I don’t think you can pass any of the three up.

The rest can be debated as to who should be chosen. It should note that we will become incredibly thin at receiver as soon as the regular season ends (Moore, Davis, Mims under contract). McGovern has been disappointing and the right guard spot has been a net negative. So IOL and receiver are a need. Some form of run stopper (LB/DT) is a need as is safety, but the talent of the edge rushers who will be available is too good to pass up in my opinion. And we have an injured Carl Lawson coming back and an overpaid JFM who has been ok at best this year.

You can also make the argument that DT/LB can be filled pretty easily outside of the first two rounds (including FA).

In conclusion of my semi-buzzed CFB Saturday rambling - the Jets have a lot of options.

Also adding - David Ojabo for Michigan is a monster as well.

I agree there are a lot of options I just don’t want anyone to lose sight of who the best player and fit is for the Jets in this draft. I think/hope we come away with tyler and an edge with the first 2 picks.

Linderbaum may be available with the Seahawks pick. If the Jets are picking on the top 5 again you cannot use that on a Center, no matter how good of a prospect.

They said that about Quentin Nelson as a guard at the 6. Ask the colts how they feel about that.
