I think they should get more of a suspension for getting caught trying to cheat a drug test than for testing positive.
Honestly, I don't really see the difference. I doubt the players who tested positive walked into the testing clinic thinking "well, I guess I might as well just face the music and let the whole world know that I've been juicing". They all thought they were going to get away with it for one reason or another. Either they thought that the substance they were using was not going to trigger a positive result, or they took steps that they thought would mask the presence and/or flush it from their system. I doubt anyone is testing positive without having put in some effort to manipulate the system.
Yeah but the difference is proof. You can't suspend a guy for something that you assume he did, even if its very likely that he did. Plus some guys have taken banned substances not knowing that they were actually banned (theres plenty of over the counter substances that you can buy online or at some stores that are banned). But I definitely also believe that if you catch someone trying to avoid detection (ie non human urine) you gotta tack that onto the charges
I guess I don't have as much of a problem with a guy smoking weed or something like that and then drinking a shit ton of water or a guy using steroids and leaving himself enough time in the offseason that he will test clean by test time. Buying somebody elses urine is another step in deception. I know my rationale here is pretty weak. I just know that I would be more angry about somebody thinking they could cheat unabashedly than if there was a little doubt in their mind they could be caught. I mean animal urine...that is pretty blatant.
