Needless to say, everyone believes that Vernon Gholston (our 6th overall pick 2 years ago) is a genuine bust. As of right now it looks inevitable that the upcoming season will be uncapped. This gives our team the best possible opportunity to cut Gholston without taking a cap hit (seeing that there isn't one). In Mike Tannenbaum's "state of the union" press conference a few weeks ago he was noncommittal on whether or not to cut the "Ghost". In fact, Tannenbaum said that "there's no data to suggest Vernon Gholston doesn't have passion for football". This (to me) sounds like a person grasping at straws to find a reason to not cut ties with a mistake. My guess is that Tannenbaum (and possibly Woody Johnson) is afraid that if we cut the "Ghost" he might actually turn into something on another team. I think that they shouldn't have anything to worry about if, come this April, we draft a player (such as Brandon Graham) with one of our early round picks that pans out so that people can forget all about Vernon Gholston's "lack of football skills". The reason I made this thread is to talk about how to deal with the last remaining "Ghost" from the Mangini era.
They bring Gholston into camp and let him compete for a job. If Ryan thinks he earned another year he keeps him, otherwise he cuts ties. The Jets cut Gholston in the last cut so that the odds are less of him resurfacing quickly against them in some place like New England.
If someone could move it that'd be great (or I could just copy and paste). Since Gholston is barely a part of the team I figured I might get flamed over there. Ah well, whatever.
Is that accurate that we can cut players without cap penalties? I know there is no cap this upcoming season, but the cap isn't my thing. If that's the case, then this maybe the best opportunity to cut our losses.
