So we sent Ceda to Florida for Gregg and Kerry Wood is on the outs. Pretty crummy decision making all around. I'm sure Jim Hendry only makes these choices so that when one works out everyone says it's all down to him and he knew better than everyone else.

    Bah.

I'm not sure I'd say Wood is a legend, but he is certainly a good pitcher, one of the better ones to play in Chicago.

Wood must have priced himself out of Hendrys range, which was probly far too small, given Woods tenure and legacy, and that he was a premier closer. Woods has been on the DL what? 12? 13 times in his 10 years in ChiTown?

He's a guy who could end up in NYM if they blow it with Frod or Fuentes.

Stupid trade by the Cubs.... Gregg blew 9 saves last year and Wood was very good for them in the closer role. Money is no issue for a team like the Cubs so for them to not resign Wood because of it is stupid. As a Met fan I'd like to see them make a push for him and either Krod or Fuentes and use Wood as the 8th inning guy. You have him in the 8th and Fuentes or Krod in the 9th or if you sign Fuentes you use him in the 8th and then Wood in the 9th. Either way it's a major major upgrade....

The Cubs are probly trying to keep salary lowish to ease their sale.

Either way, shit trade. Cubs are going nowhere, again.

    Gregg isn't a scrub pitcher.

From what I read the issue with Wood wasn't money, it was years. They don't want to give him a huge multi-year deal, and I don't blame them. He's only going to play half the time.

I think this title would be more fitting for:

Mets trade Kazmir to Rays for Wrong Zambrano

man it's been a long sad history for the cubs if kerry wood qualifies as a legend, he's like derek Lowe without the playoff wins. or ben sheets, or carl pavano

I see the Ben Sheets and Carl Pavano comparisons, but Derek Lowe?

Lowe was a star SP for a year or so, and a star RP for 2 years, with a lot of nothing mixed around it.

Lowe has always been a great pitcher, he just steps it up in the playoffs.

I think it's fair to call Wood a Cubs legend, though certainly a bit of a tragic one. It's not like he was just "good" before the injuries, I mean, well just watch.

Some of those pitches moved like goddamn wiffle balls. I think Doc Gooden is a better comparison than Sheets or Lowe or fucking Carl Pavano. Is he a hall of famer? Hell no. But he had an incredible run and meant a ton to that franchise.

Not to mention that he was always clearly excited to be a Cub.

    You're a Cubs fan too?

I was pissed when they let Kerry go...his 20 K game is still the most memorable game of my life and it's the reason I became a Cubs fan.

Everytime I think about Kerry Wood I think about Mark Prior...then my eyes get all teary and I thank Jah I don't own a gun or like a poisonous bowl or something.

I thought Ceda was overrated, but so was Gregg. Why the fuck would you want to pay a reliever more money? The Royals have gotten rid of 2 very good bullpen arms this seasons...one was a Rule 5 pick the other was a 27 year old nobody with a good arm (making nothing). Gregg's going to get like 3+ million just to be an OK reliever for us.

Hendry as a GM still hasn't won me over. Theres no actual plan it seems...it just kind of...is. We're rich enough to get over it, but I'm still looking for a little brain power. The Marlins practically gave away Olsen and Willingham...Hermida's been available offseason...whens the last time the Cubs got a sub-25 year old left handed, patient, power hitting bat? Why isn't he on the team yet? He literally fits our biggest need...LH hitting power hitting RF with patience, athleticism, and youth...and we got Kelly fucking Gregg.

It'd also be nice to see us pursue Burnett or Lowe. A healthy Burnett gives us a sick, sick staff.

Yes, I'm more cynical about my baseball team than my football team.

    Yep.

Wood should have been a Cub for life. There is no legitimate excuse for chasing him out of the door. To be honest, it's soured me on the whole operation.

Umm, I thimk the point is Marmol closing with Gregg as a 7th 8th inning guy at 3 mil saves a ton of money over wood closing and marmol as a setup guy

Still not a fan of Gregg...then again he's a reliever so it is whatever.

I'm more mad Hermida isn't a Cub right now. When I saw a trade with the Marlins I was like "zomg Hendry...HERMIDA!!" but...no.

Marmol is wasted as a closer. Why take him out of a role he's excelling in?
