From Twitter: Cris Collinsworth : "If one of these quarterbacks were to make that kind of jump in year No. 2, I do think it could be Zach Wilson"
Man i hope he's right. I'd say the biggest question heading into 2022 is Zach Wilson, followed by Becton, and our run D. If ZW in particular can take a big step up, future will be looking bright. No QB including Zach had been in a good situation the last 5 or so years, but this year the QB will finally be set up to succeed.
The Jets need Wilson to improve. He doesn’t need to be a top ten QB (although that would be nice), but playing consistently like the 14th-18th best QB in the league is both a large and realistic jump. With a revamped line, another year within the system and most of the same receiving corps plus some new talent, I believe he can do it with initiative and the right attitude. It is nice that Collinsworth agrees. But that’s about it.
I would be happy to have a top 20 to 25 QB next year. Absent, the Fitz year, we have not had a top 25 QB since 2008.
Just gave it a listen....he also predicted the Jets to finish sub .500 so let's not get too crazy with the CC love He just thinks Zach's got some talent, and is being put in a better position to succeed than last year. I tend to agree.
The single largest deciding factor on whether a QB will pan out is the situation he goes to. It’s not a guarantee, but the correlation is huge for QB’s who go to good situations to be good and QB’s who go to bad situations to be bad. Is Mac Jones the best QB of the 2021 Rookies? Maybe, but probably not. Did he go to the best situation? Absolutely. If I was a media person, and you see what the situations look like for each of these 2nd year QB’s, I’d be hitching my wagon to Wilson making a bigger step than the others just knowing how much better of a situation he has then they do. Mac Jones and Zach Wilson have the odds in their favor vs Trevor Lawrence, Justing Fields, and Trey Lance. Lance has a good situation, but no experience yet.
I would say that is a fair assessment of the Jets going into this up coming season. We still play in a division with Buffalo, an improved Miami, and a still playoff caliber team in the Pats. If we happen to go 8-9 or 7-10, and competitive with every team I would be very happy with that outcome going forward. That's obviously the worst case scenario But CC is right on both accounts..
Funny enough, I am more curious about the leap (or not) of our defense. Salah will have his personnel now and one more year of experience so they HAVE to improve significantly.
The defense has a lot of holes, is inexperienced, and has poor depth. Unless Saleh can pull off a new scheme I think it’s gonna struggle quite a bit unfortunately.
I don't see a lot of holes.. Where? Safety? That's not even that bad to me. TBH. I don't see It. This roster has been overhauled significantly on both sides of the ball. I definitely don't see a lot of holes.
There were holes, and hopefully they're now mostly filled, even if it will take some time for them to mesh.
the largeness of the jump is bigger than the realism of this as an expectation. possible vs probable. ( accounting for history and not this SPECIFIC player/case)
