Could Pete Carroll Have Eventually Succeeded For The Jets

Just a thought that crossed my mind while things are slow in the offseason.

I'm honestly thrilled that we have Rex Ryan as our head coach. He's said all the right things since he's been hired. We'll obviously have to wait to see if that translates to on-field success, but so far I'm a big fan of his.

But I just got to thinking about our past coaches. As most of us know, in 1994, we were 6-5 heading into a huge game against Miami for 1st place in the AFC East. Dan Marino pulled out the famous clock play in the closing seconds and the Jets somehow managed to lose a game they probably should have won on a freak play. They never won again that season, finished in last place in the AFC East, and Pete Carroll was fired after only one season as head coach. He went on to have moderate success as coach of the Pats, and then found his true calling becoming the most successful college coach this decade. I always thought he deserved more of a chance with the Jets. He only got one season, and it was ruined by a stupid fluke play. Do you think the success he has had at USC would have been apparent if the Jets had kept him? Just something to wonder about while things are slow in the offseason.

I always though PC got the shaft. Regardless, he didn't show much in NE before becoming a dominant college coach, so judging by his body of work, I don't think he would have had his USC success with the Jets.

Didn't help that his veterans, like James Hasty, quit on him at the end of the season.

Pete Carroll wins at USC because he's the best recruiter in the nation.

I don't think anybody but Parcells could have turned this franchise around.

I liked Pete Carroll and I sure liked him better than Rich K*&^%^e. I knew what was gonna happen as soon as Hess hired that idiot. Carroll got a bad rap with the Jets and I do think he would have done better the next season. Carroll was a pretty good defensive coordinator and was certainly more qualified than Herm "I'm too good to be a coordinator anywhere" Edwards.

Pete Carroll got the shaft --- he would have done better the following season.

Most College Coaches who come to the Nfl Run back into college cuz there scared... its a different game completely... They have the power in college and are able to dictate and control college athletes becuz they get no revenue... PC is a good coach but a good College Coach and thats it...

Pete Carroll was nothing more than a good head coach. if given talent, he would have had a few winning seasons, but probably would have had the same amount of success as Herm before inevitably getting the boot.

He would have been a good coordinator, but not a Head Coach in the NFL. College and the NFL are two different ball games. How many college coaches really succeed in the NFL? Jimmy Johnson is the only one that I can recall, and that was because of the Walker trady to Minnesota.

I'd have to agree with this. He got the shaft here but certainly got a fair shot in New England, inherited a Super Bowl team, and in my opinion underacheived with them considering what they did before him and after him. He seems perfectly suited to what he's doing, which has proven to be a vastly different animal than being an NFL head coach.

Pete Carroll was always one of my favs when he was our DC. If you watch tapes you'll see his D doing things that weren't being done.
He was a great motivator and players coach.

I remember hearing of him playing pick up B-Ball with some of the players.
He got a raw deal Here and It bothered me.

Succeed? Who knows? Maybe he woulda been an excellent GM also? We wont know... but I still think he was one helluva DC

Carroll was a great talent who was in over his head in NY when he got the opportunity. If the Giants had given him the job instead of the Jets he probably would still be there. This team dements people.

I liked him too but the players didn't and that was the problem. As soon as all the veterans started calling him out Woody went out and hired the biggest softy the league has ever seen in Da Herm.

They definitely should have given Groh another chance and told the players to grow a set.

They certainly should have given Groh another season to develop the QB he drafted. A huge part of the Jets success from 2001 to 2004 was a direct result of how the Jets managed that 2000 draft. That was the last competent Jets draft until 2006 and somehow they eked more wins out of it than you'd have expected given the talent level on the team.

I agree with the posts above about Al Groh. Based on the limited evidence, I think it's more likely that Groh would have been successful here than that Caroll would have.

There's no question in my mind that both were screwed by management.

pete carroll is nothing more than an average head coach. when he can go ahead and commit recruiting violations, have boosters pay kids to sit 3 deep on usc bench and have guys with steroid dispensing soda machines in the dorms he can be misconstrued as a good to great coach.

HOWEVER as he proved in the nfl he cant do it when on a level playing field, and having to deal with actual rules on how he gets guys and what they take.
