...run for the end zone when he recovered the onside kick? I haven't see the replay of the game or watch the game with lot of angles like some of the folks on this board. Would that have been possible instead of him just going down?
I don't believe its possible for the kicking team to advance the ball in that situation by the rules. edit- yeah against the rules: "A kickoff is illegal unless it travels 10 yards OR is touched by the receiving team. Once the ball is touched by the receiving team or has gone 10 yards, it is a free ball. Receivers may recover and advance. Kicking team may recover but NOT advance UNLESS receiver had possession and lost the ball." http://www.nfl.com/rulebook/kickoff
I think you can advance it. You are taught to fall on the ball though. Trying to scoop it up and run can lead to problems. He did the right thing.
Marshall dove on top of the ball anyway and went into fetal position to protect it. Browning gave you the answer on the Official rule
We then had enough time to execute a well designed hook and ladderal drill..... Wheres the spaghetti play coach when ya need him!??
Could Marshall have not jumped off sides with 1 second left on the clock before the hail mairy would have been called?
In our case there was so little time left Marshall falling on it (and stopping the clock) was the best deal. Had he picked it up and tried to run with it we would have: Tied the game, or clock expired with Marshall trying to lateral it. Now that I've typed that, Marshall taking off and lateraling it seems like a better option then Fitz throwing the ball 60 yards. You might have a good point!
As already pointed out, he could not advance the ball in that particular situation. The question I have is if he had advanced he ball, would it be ruled dead at the point of recovery, or a penalty and a 10 second runoff? I'm guessing no penalty and possession at spot of recovery.
