The purpose of this thread is to consider who from the 2025 roster we should keep as a base for the 2026 roster. My opinion below is that we keep 14 offense, 5 defense, 3 ST, with small preference for 2 other guys. The rest can get the hell out of here or try for a spot next year. WR: Williams, Wilson RB: Breece, Allen, Smith, Ng OL: starting 5 plus AVT TE: Taylor, Ruckert DE: JJ, McDonald DB: Moore, Stephens, Az The 2 other guys: Stiggers, Arian 3ST Note that there are zero QB, Inside DL, LB Stiggers and Arian have chance to improve and already demonstrate good ST ability This makes 24 core guys.
AD Mitchell and Menchie are good depth pieces, AD has a lot of potential... but still not a #2 currently. Briggs had good year. Our punter was excellent. Folk was great Simpson needs to go. Other than that, yup. I can't think of anyone else off the top of my head. The rookie linebacker can stay and be useless i guess.
Briggs had some flash but IMO he seemed to be molested in Buffalo on 1/4/26. IDK his PFF score but he is higher ranked as a pass rusher from inside than a run stopper I do believe. Im open to stats showing otherwise. Maybe Mitchell and Mencihe can win a roster spot at 3, 4, or 5 depending on who we draft and who's available--personally not against the possibility. Simpson pissed me off a couple times too. I can see kicking him to the curb.
What a piece of crap roster Douglas left Moogie. Can we get a bag of chips for Sherwood and McDonald? Two of Joe Douglas's biggest projects that get run over early and often. Not their fault though--Probably wasn't their idea to both play out of position and shoved around by much bigger guys. One reason I wanted Aaron Glenn to stay--at least he knows, or should know, which guys from the 2025 roster stink. If they bring in a new coach now, it will take him a another year to figure out all Douglas' wasted picks and acquisitions. No, I don't think Glenn has shown much as a head coach. But you cannot make a nuclear bomb without plutonium.
I would bring both Metchie and Mitchell to camp, but neither is a lock to make the roster, and neither of them better than WR4, maybe WR3 if we can’t find anyone better…Mitchell STILL drops too many balls, saw one go off his hands against the Bills yet again. Metchie…eh…sometimes he shows up and makes a few catches and sometimes he’s invisible. Would bring them to camp to see how much is really on them vs. the QB, but I think drafting a WR high, preferably in the first round, is a HUGE priority for us. I would also roll with the three backs we had going into this season in Hall, Allen and Davis. I like Williams (#18) a lot as a KR and he’s a more dependable receiver than the other two guys above, maybe doesn’t have their upside but he’s been better than both so far in his limited chances. Going into next year, I think our needs are QB, WR, DL, LB and S…basically we need help at all three levels on D, but we need a WR in the worst way too.
You hit the nail on the head! Those 5 positions are exactly where they need help. I think OL RB TE and CB are ok but the 5 you identify MUST be addressed in the draft or free agency or both. Still surprised the jets went into 2025 w journeyman Josh Reynolds on his 5th team as a starting WR (????)
That was really shocking to me. I really did think we would make a play for fellow Ohio state WR Olave. We didn’t and had the worst WR room in the league by far. Then Wilson goes down and it goes from bad to worse
Breece is a goner unless we franchise him, and even then he might refuse to sign with us. I don’t think he wants to be here at all. Probably gonna have to sign a like Etienne or Dowdle if we even can. No one is gonna wanna come here. I would keep the entire OL and look to improve on G and/or C positions. I would keep all WR’s and add another high in the draft. I’m not in love with Mason Taylor or Ruckert but I can live with them for one more season, we have so many other needs. On DL I think we should keep McDonald, JJ, Phillips, and Briggs. Clemons and everyone else can go. I don’t think our DL is bad so much as I think they’re poorly coached, however we need better depth. That said, there’s some solid Edge guys hitting the market in FA, I’d like us to be players there. LB’s honestly I’d empty the entire room if we could, but we need at least 2 starting caliber replacements. Devon Bush would be nice. CB’s again I don’t know if the players suck because the coaching is terrible. We probably need to add at least one solid veteran. Safeties have been abysmal. Poor players coached poorly leads to what we’ve seen all year. Gilman would be a nice addition.
I think you are correct about Breece, on both fronts. Seriously, would YOU want to be here if you were him? He touched the ball 33% LESS than his peers and that's considering he was the ONLY offensive option the moment Wilson went down. The 49'ers make it a gospel point of feeding McCaffrey. Atlanta with Robinson. When you don't have a single decent offensive option how is that Hall goes unused? Engstrand needs to wear that ridiculous stat like a scarlet letter and never let it happen again, as long as he's a coordinator in this league. Outside of 3 players, the ENTIRE defense needs to be ripped to shreds and rebuilt from the ground up. I'd send the immediate message by cutting McDonald IV whom never should have been drafted in the first place. This is going to be a brutal next couple of years as I don't feel we have the coaching talent to take advantage of shit we draft. EoS
Agree on most of this, but I disagree on cutting McD. He is what he is…an undersized pass rusher with speed. It’s not that he needs to be cut. It’s that we need a fucking coach who understands his players and puts them in position to succeed. Saleh would know how to maximize McD just like he maximized Huff, who by the way went to the Eagles for big money and flopped there. McD needs to be a situational pass rusher. If you have him out there as a starting DE he’s going to fail because he won’t hold up against the run and set the edge. So don’t expect him to. Bring him in on obvious passing downs and let him rush the passer. He’s a streaky pass rusher, that’s it. Not a terrible piece to have but you have to see his limitations and play to his strengths. That would be good coaching. I get to an extent Glenn may not have had much of a choice as it’s not like we had a bunch of options at DE…JJ coming off injury was a shell of his former self, and we had to play Clemons a lot and well we can easily see he is not a starting DE in this league and a penalty machine when playing a lot of snaps. So I’ll give some rope there. But the point is that we need coaches who can see players for what they are and who will put them in position to maximize their talent. Glenn and Wilks did not do that across the board. Hard to find a single player outside of the punter and #18 Williams the return guy who blossomed under this coaching staff.
I think I'd keep the entire offensive line for another year. I'd re-sign AVT since I can't imagine he will sign for too much with his injury history. Thats about as solid an offensive line as you can ask of a team with a developing QB. Wilson and AD Mitchell are under contract for next season, so I'm keeping them no question. I'd address WR in the first four picks, as well as in FA. I'd re-sign Breece if he's open to it. If not, he gets the franchise tag. A RB his quality is really important to the development of a young QB. Defense doesn't have one person I'd call a "core player." McDonald and JJ are both going to be here next year because there are no savings in releasing them. Maybe one of them gets traded in the draft or before the start of next season. Outside of that, some of the young CBs seemed like there was something there; AZ Thomas, Stiggers and Brownlee. None of them stop CB from being a need though IMO. Same with Mauigoa. I know the Jets willingly traded their two most important "core" defenders, but its still wild how little there is behind the two of them.
Agree with all of this…well said. I’m a bit down on Mitchell as he just drops way too many passes…I’d bring him to camp as you said he’s under contract and he gets open, but I would not count on him to be anything more than WR3 at best, and honestly he’s more WR4 to me until he develops some hands. Getting open doesn’t mean jack shit if you drop half the balls that hit you in the hands. I’d like to see him with some competent QB play too though, so yes, bring him to camp, but I still rate WR as one of our biggest needs, right after QB and right up there with DL. Agree also on the corners…we’ve got a few decent bodies, but we don’t have a great corner anymore, so we can roll with these guys for a bit, but if we want a top 5 defense, we for sure will need to upgrade the corner spot. I just think that fixing the offense is more important, and we need more help on DL especially DE than we do at CB. It’s not holding us back from improving right now, but it will hold us back from building a real playoff caliber D
