Don't know if many of you remember Art Powell but he was the #1 receiver for the NY Titans from 1960-62. Maynard was the other starting end. In 1960 and 62 he topped over 1000 yards receiving. I was heartbroken when Al Davis stole him from the Titans. Saw him a couple of times at the old Polo Grounds. Sadly owner Harry Wismer the Titans owner had massive money problems and couldn't afford Powell. One of the best during the early years.

Money was always a problem under owner Harry Wismer. HC Sammy Baugh would not coach the Titans unless Wismer paid his one year salary of $25,000 in cash before the season started. Wonder if it was in a suitcase??

I love the early history of the Titans/Jets.

Pop Quiz- Why did Sonny Werblin rename the team the Jets?

Mets, Jets, Laguardia, Shea. At least that's what my Dad later told me, I was 4 at the time Werblin took over.
Later, following the same tradition, the Nets went to Nassau and we got the Sets, the pro tennis team.
