As an optimist, I see we should /could be in line for a boatload of comp picks in 2014. I looked up the rules and in a nut shell it is based on the number of your players who leave on expired contracts, their new contract value and performance minus what you sign. Picks are at the end of rounds three thru seven. Max awarded picks is four which we should reach. It appears a lot of our FA are indeed leaving so I thought I would start a list of each. Note Garrard was a cut player so he doesn't count against us and likewise Pouha will get us nothing because we released him. We may not sign a lot of expired contract guys because due to our FA losses they could cost us a pick. i.e. if two players equal value sign the cut guy. So far losses include: Landry 4yrs for 24 million Keller 1 for 4.25 Devito 3 years 12.6 Greene 3 years 10 Bell 1 yr .905 likely losses: Folk ? Moore Slauson Signings so far: Goodson 3 yrs 6.9 The formula is not published but for the past year it looked like a contract averaging 5 million might get you to the fourth round comp pick. 4.5 million around 5th round and 3 million was a sixth round. This is ballpark and I am no expert just thought some people might like to know. I am not sure how resigning one of your own who has become a free agent counts. I don't think it does but I am sure someone knows. Perhaps a moderator could pin this so we could update it as free agency unfolds. Since I expect our signings to be low value we want our guys who leave to get as much as they can(Landry Keller Moore) to bump us past the sixth round that Greene and DeVito ballpark around. Update with Landry prob 5 th rounder.
Thirds are the big dollar contracts like we would expect him to get. it varies by year but eight to ten should get you there. We would be in line for a 2015 third for Revis and only if we don't sign one less free agent than we lose. If we lose three and sign three then maybe we get a pick as the wikipedia definition indicates but it would be a seventh! If we sign four due to having cap room and lose three we may get nothing hence the reason some advocate trading him now. Please lets not turn this into another Revis thread but stick with 2014.
Gotcha, was just wondering the dollar amount and if landry could get a 3rd in return just using revis as an example. Thanks
updated for Keller and Goodson. Goodson may offset Greene? Best case as of now a four and two fives maybe a seven for Bell. Guess at worst case a five and two sixes.
Free agency is still going on, and the Jets will sign more people. When FA is over, thas when you will have a good idea of the comp picks.
You can't make predictions because you have no idea how these players will play in 2014. For example, if the players that left dont do shit, and Goodson, Colon, Garrard have great years, then you aren't getting shit. You have to wait.
Good thing is Kolb and Colon got cut so they don't count as FA. Goodson, Garrard and Garay do though. So far we lost 5 and signed 3.
Colon and Garrard have no bearing on this process. They were released by their teams and therefore not applicable towards free agency.
Only Goodson and Barnes have signed with us outright. So if we sign DHB and someone like Huff/Pollard, it won't count since they were cut by their teams.
Jets get short end of the stick again in 2013 No pick for us this year. Not only that but Cleveland and Houston are the omly teams to get less than us since the whole thing started in 1994: http://nfllabor.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/03-18-13-compensatory-draft-picks.pdf The following 2013 compensatory draft picks have been determined by the NFL Management Council: ROUND CHOICE/ ROUND OVERALL SELECTION TEAM 3 33-95 Houston 3 34-96 Kansas City 3 35-97 Tennessee 4 33-130 Baltimore 4 34-131 San Francisco 4 35-132 Detroit 4 36-133 Atlanta 5 33-166 Miami 5 34-167 Green Bay 5 35-168 Baltimore 6 33-201 Houston 6 34-202 Tennessee 6 35-203 Baltimore 6 36-204 Kansas City 6 37-205 Oakland 6 38-206 Pittsburgh 7 33-239 Philadelphia 7 34-240 Cincinnati 7 35-241 Seattle 7 36-242 Seattle 7 37-243 Atlanta 7 38-244 Atlanta 7 39-245 Detroit7 40-246 San Francisco 7 41-247 Baltimore 7 42-248 Tennessee 7 43-249 Atlanta 7 44-250 Miami 7 45-251 Cincinnati 7 46-252 San Francisco 7 47-253 New York Giants 7 48-254 Indianapolis Following are the compensatory free agents lost and signed last year by the clubs that will receive compensatory picks in the 2013 NFL Draft: ATLANTA Lost: Kelvin Hayden, Curtis Lofton, James Sanders, Eric Weems Signed: None BALTIMORE Lost: Ben Grubbs, Jarret Johnson, Brandon McKinney, Haruki Nakamura, Cory Redding, Tom Zbikowski Signed: Sean Considine, Corey Graham CINCINNATI Lost: Andre Caldwell, Nate Livings, Mike McGlynn, Frostee Rucker, Jerome Simpson Signed: Jason Allen, Jamaal Anderson, BenJarvus Green-Ellis DETROIT Lost: Drew Stanton, Eric Wright Signed: None GREEN BAY Lost: Matt Flynn, Scott Wells Signed: Jeff Saturday HOUSTON Lost: Jason Allen, Mike Brisiel, Joel Dreessen, Mario Williams Signed: Bradie James, Donnie Jones INDIANAPOLIS Lost: Jamaal Anderson, Pierre Garcon, Dan Orlovsky, Jeff Saturday, Jacob Tamme, Philip Wheeler Signed: Mike McGlynn, Brandon McKinney, Cory Redding, Samson Satele, Drew Stanton, Tom Zbikowski KANSAS CITY Lost: Brandon Carr, Le’Ron McClain, Kyle Orton, Barry Richardson Signed: Peyton Hillis, Brady Quinn MIAMI Lost: Will Allen, Chad Henne, Kendall Langford Signed: Richard Marshall NEW YORK GIANTS Lost: Mario Manningham, Aaron Ross, David Tollefson Signed: Martellus Bennett, Sean Locklear, Shaun Rogers OAKLAND Lost: Michael Bush, Jason Campbell, Samson Satele, Trevor Scott Signed: Mike Brisiel, David Tollefson, Philip Wheeler PHILADELPHIA Lost: Juqua Parker, Steve Smith Signed: Demetress Bell PITTSBURGH Lost: William Gay Signed: None SAN FRANCISCO Lost: Blake Costanzo, Joshua Morgan, Madieu Williams Signed: Mario Manningham SEATTLE Lost: Atari Bigby, John Carlson, David Hawthorne, Charlie Whitehurst Signed: Matt Flynn, Jason Jones TENNESSEE Lost: Cortland Finnegan, William Hayes, Jason Jones Signed: None TOTAL 2013 NFL COMPENSATORY DRAFT PICKS Atlanta 4 Baltimore 4 San Francisco 3 Tennessee 3 Cincinnati 2 Detroit 2 Houston 2 Kansas City 2 Miami 2 Seattle 2 Green Bay 1 Indianapolis 1 New York Giants 1 Oakland 1 Philadelphia 1 Pittsburgh 1 TOTAL 32 NFL CLUB SUMMARY OF COMPENSATORY DRAFT PICKS, 1994-2013 * Baltimore 37 Green Bay 31 Dallas 30 Philadelphia 30 Tennessee *** 30 St. Louis ** 27 Buffalo 26 New England 26 Pittsburgh 26 NY Giants 22 San Francisco 22 Cincinnati 20 Indianapolis 20 Seattle 20 Jacksonville 19 San Diego 18 Tampa Bay 18 Chicago 17 Detroit 17 Miami 17 Minnesota 17 Oakland 17 Arizona 16 Atlanta 15 Kansas City 15 Carolina 14 Washington 12 New Orleans 10 Denver 9 NY Jets 9 Cleveland 6 Houston 6 TOTAL 619 * 1994 was the first year that compensatory draft choices were awarded. ** St. Louis picks include those awarded to Los Angeles Rams. *** Tennessee picks include those awarded to Houston Oilers.
Comp picks are stupid anyway. Why should they even have that? You can't sign your players thats your own fault- you shouldn't be compensated for it. In what realm does that make sense.
Or we trade all our good players before that point (Abraham, Douglas, Keyshawn, Vilma, now Revis most likely).
Think it also shows how much Jets struggled in the draft. Not to often a vet hit FA & there was a young guy on rookie contract ready to step in & take his role.
