I dug a little bit on Pro Football Reference for a few stats comparing the two teams in terms of both offense and defense. Found some interesting similarities. 2009 Jets Offense PPG / Turnovers / Total Yards 19 / 2.3 pg / 318 ypg 2010 Jets Offense PPG / Turnovers / Total Yards 26.5 / 0.67 pg / 334 ypg 2009 Jets Defense PPG / Turnovers / Passing Yards / Rushing Yards 17.3 / 1.7 pg / 205 ypg / 115 ypg 2010 Jets Defense PPG / Turnovers / Passing Yards / Rushing Yards 16.8 / 2.3 pg / 229 ypg / 90 ypg
So the defense looks about as good yet are ranked 21st. Did the entire league get better except the Jets?
Some interesting points: - Obviously we're holding onto the ball much better this season. - We're scoring a lot more points even though we're not getting that much more production in terms of yards. - Our pass defense isn't as bad as we think it is compared to last year. - Our rushing defense is much better so far this year, and we had Jenkins through the first 6 games last season. - We're forcing turnovers more frequently.
The jets have played 5 legit teams and the Bills. Later on this year they get to go up against some pretty bad offenses so their numbers will even out against the rest of the league.
Through the first 6 games our passing defense last year was 205 ypg. The team ended the season with a 153 ypg average, which became best in the league. This means that our defense improved. It's reasonable to assume that this year's defense will improve as well. Also, our rush defense last season went from 115 ypg after 6 weeks to 98 ypg. It improved, but it's average was still worse than the 90 ypg we're giving up this season.
Our rushing offense through 6 games was 163 ypg last season, and it's so far 160 ypg this season. Not a big dropoff, TJ lovers.
Our O is much better, Our D is much worse BUT the D is finishing games which it did not do a year ago. As Revis gets healthier we will see a huge difference in this defense.
How is our D MUCH worse? Did you even look at the statistics? Our rushing defense is giving up 25 yards less per game, and our passing defense is only about 15 ypg worse.
I really thought we'd see a dropoff in the running game early on with the loss of Faneca, but have been pleasantly surprised.
3rd down conversions is a place we're still struggling. It seems like we're giving up more points than last year at this time, but according to your stats we're not?
Thank Slauson, he is really doing a nice job. Once Revis gets up to speed, the D will be that much better.
I still hear that we haven't played anyone comment from people when we played miami, NE, Balt, Minn after the got moss, Den (#1 passing team), and we got 1 gimme (bills)
You could make the case that our defense is giving up more first downs. 2009 Jets Defense First Downs Given up: 17.8 through 6 games 2010 Jets Defense First Downs Given up: 18.8 through 6 games
I assume the passing numbers don't take into account penalty yardage. I wouldn't say the D has been much worse but it isn't near last year's level yet.
We're about even in Points Per Game from last season, and we're actually nearly a point better this season. 17.3 to 16.8. Our offense also gave up the ball a lot more last season, 14 offensive turnovers to just 4 this season. The defense of last season held up far better being on the field more often.
Our D cannot get off the field and that's not a good thing w/ our much better O. Our 3rd down % has been pathetic outside of the Buf game and we have given up an insane amount of 3rd and longs. Anyone waqtching this D thinking it's even close to last year I question what they are watching. Again, where this D has been better is closing out games. A year ago they blew a ton of games late but so far they have come through this year. I expect when revis is healthy our 3rd down D will greatly improve and overall we will have a better D than last year but so far it has not been and I don't care what the overall #s say.
I would think Slauson will be really good as he gets some more games under his belt. He is really learning on the job.
