I'm in a 10-man (possibly 12, but most likely 10) league, and I started brainstorming for this year's Draft. Just to put things in context: About 70% of the guys are very knowledgeable, and then there are few who might make some questionable decisions.

I've been fairly successful in this group, making the Playoffs every year (4 years), usually with one of the better records, but I've never been able to win it all. For a while, I was ahead of the curve by emphasizing value on WRs and TEs, but now the rest of the league is aware of how valuable those positions are, especially this year, where the RB crop looks sketchy.

So, I was thinking of strategies, and one approach I have is to target specific combos. Before I elaborate on that, let me provide the format:
    QB
    RB
    RB
    WR
    WR
    TE
    WR/TE
    WR/RB
    K
    DEF
    (and then bench)

The scoring is pretty standard. 6 points for a TD; PPR (0.5 per catch); +3 bonus for QBs, RBs, WRs who hit the yardage bonus within a game.

My idea for combos is to target players from a team, in hopes of possessing players that are most probable to get points in that team's red zone scoring. That was worded terribly, but anyway, here are the combos (in no particular order):
    • Aaron Rodgers/Eddie Lacy
    • Gio Bernard/AJ Green
    • Jamaal Charles/Alex Smith
    • Peyton Manning/Demaryius Thomas
    • Shady McCoy/Nick Foles
    • Shady McCoy/Zach Ertz
    • RG3/DeSean Jackson
    • RG3/Pierre Garcon
    • Drew Brees/Jimmy Graham
    • Philip Rivers/Keenan Allen
    • Keenan Allen/Ryan Matthews

Obviously, some of those are long-shots (e.g. Brees & Graham), but again, I'm just brainstorming ideas right now. So, I was wondering what some of you FF gurus think about this strategy, and if you have any suggestions, input, etc.

If "RB crop looks sketchy", why do you want to proceed by "emphasizing value on WRs and TEs"?

Because I think RBs can be acquired throughout the Season, in numerous ways.

So are WRs and sometimes TEs.
BTW, I'm not attacking you, just trying to understand your logic. If believe good RBs will be only few, why not focus on them.

Re your question, tandems are good. The only problem with them, as with WRs in general, it's hard to predict which ones will pan out. Outside of few top shelf guys like Megatron, I don't like to rely on WRs.
My league is similar to yours and I've been targeting catching RBs like Woodhead or Forte. 2nd RB is cheaper in the draft and would give you consistent points.

My logic is that I can spend an early pick to fill one of my RB spots, and then I can still get another quality starter (or sleeper) later, to fill the other RB spot. I think, other than the top tier guys - trying to predict the consistent RBs is more difficult than trying to predict the WRs. But maybe that's just me. So, I use my early picks on QB and WRs (and TE if there's an elite one there), which is why I consider them to have more value. But, again, that's my own personal value I'm applying to the players/positions.

    Forte was a good suggestion.

    I wouldn't mind a Forte/Marshall or even Forte/Cutler tandem.

I wonder if some tandems are easier to obtain when picking near the beginning or end of the round because of the snake order.

There is high risk / high reward with that strategy. If the team of the combo does great you will reap great benefits. But sometimes you can screw yourself over.

I did that very same thing in 2012, I loaded up on Eagles players. I remember the magic the Eagles had in 2010 and how strongly they finished in 2011 despite the down year record wise. I was expecting big numbers out of Vick, McCoy and Jackson... so I went out and got them. They had that unexpected, horrendous year that got Andy Reid fired and I finished in last place.

If you don't mind taking a risk your strategy isn't a bad one. But anything can happen. A combo of Manning/Thomas seems incredible right now but if Manning gets hurt then you are screwed at both your QB and WR position, instead of just one of those important spots. Thats why I like to spread it around, but I also never win so maybe I shouldn't be giving advice haha

    Definitely some good points.

This is probably stating the obvious, but, I've had more success trying to accurately determine which Offenses will have the big year, and then I pluck guys from those Offenses, as opposed to just picking a guy based on how good he is individually. For example, one guy I've been avoiding is Larry Fitz. Love the player, his attitude, everything. But the Cardinals Offense scares me when it comes to consistent production from someone like Fitzgerald, who, clearly, is an elite WR.

So, which Offenses will be the top Offenses this season? That's the question.
