I didnt see a thread that coleman returned today.. so here it is.

Safety Erik Coleman finally returned to the field after missing all but the first day of camp due to an undisclosed illness. Coleman, who has been a staple in the Jets secondary during his first two professional seasons, played alongside Kerry Rhodes with the first string defense during the seven-on-seven drills.

“It felt great to get out there with my teammates. I have been out here running and it hurt me to watch them practice knowing I couldn’t be out there,” he said. “It is nice to get back and contribute to the team.”

Even though he has been pushing himself for the past week to get back onto the field, Coleman has lost some considerable weight. He praised the work of the Jets’ training staff as well as his strength and conditioning staff for a smooth recovery so far.

“I feel pretty good. Markus Paul is working with me and getting me into shape,” said Coleman, now in his third year with the Jets. “The training staff worked me hard to put me in shape, to see if I can handle getting off blocks. Running to the ball, tackling, and everything - it feels pretty good.”

After practicing with the first string defense early, Coleman spent the latter half of practice watching team drills from the sideline. He insists he will be ready when his number is called.

“I’m just trying to work my way into things to see where I’m at athletically and mentally,” he said with his familiar smile. “I am to be back and happy to be here. It was nice to get out there and run around. Whenever the coach says go, I’m going to go.”

Coleman is a good kid.... we, or at least I sometimes forget we're talking about people here, not livestock. I wish him the best.

I was actually a little nervous about this "illness" so this is good news. I had him poised to have a breakout season. I just hope the missed time doesn't set him back that much.

Article says he lost some considerable weight...

Anyway, he had a pretty bad Sophmore slump after his shining rookie season...Now hopefully in Year 3 he gets it together and plays like the solid player he is, it's good that he'll have to be fighting for his job though...

Absolutely, thats why I like Mangini's work ethic so far. Nothing is for granted and no one's safe until proven otherwise

I like this kid people have been bashing him hard after his second year only because of how well he played as a rook they expected him to be a pro-bowler in year 2. I believe he is over the sophomore slump and will be a force in the secondary.

I also like Smith as a backup. Our secondary doesn't look that bad right now.

    Not at all...

It's our DT and DLine depth along with penciling in starters at LB besides Vilma and Barton that are the problems.

I didn't even think he went through that bad of a sophmore slump last year. He struggled at times, and got beat deep over-the-top from time to time, but that happens to the best of them. He wasn't as good as year 1, but he was still just a 6th round pick so expectations still shouldn't of been to high and maybe he got caught up in that a little bit. I agree that he will be a major force in the secondary this year as well.
