Likely first rounders by position: Jamies Winston QB - top 2 Marcus Mariota QB - top 2 Amari Cooper WR - top 20 Kevin White WR - top 20 DeVante Parker WR - top 20 Melvin Gordon - RB Todd Gurley - RB Brandon Scherff OL Andrus Peat OL La'El Collins OL TJ Clemmings OL Erick Flowers OL Leonard Williams DT - top 5 Danny Shelton DT - top 10 Malcolm Brown - DT Randy Gregory Edge Dante Fowler Edge - top 10 Shane Ray Edge Vic Beasley Edge Alvin Dupree Edge Landon Collins S - top 20 Shaq Thompson OLB / S Trae Waynes CB Marcus Peters CB At this point is looks like Winston and Mariota are all but locks to go in the top two. Leonard Williams looks like a lock for the third pick. Both picks are hard to predict but no matter what the Raiders or Redskins do we should have a lot of options at #3 The teams behind us are easier to read: 7. Chicago will look to improve defense, Shelton or edge rusher is most likely 8. Falcons will also look to improve defense 9. Giants will go OL or pass rush 10. Rams will look for OL and are a good candidate to trade down 11. Vikings are a good bet for WR 12. Cleveland would be wise to trade up with the Rams to get their WR before the Vikings Assuming that Winston, Mariota, and Williams what do you want the Jets to do?
The Bucs could go with Williams on the 1. Same for the Titans on the 2. He's an excellent prospect and is fairly likely to beat out either Winston or Mariota for a top 2 pick.
Doubt it but my point is whether teams trade up or not the top 3 is most likely set and none of those guys falls to #6. The question is what should we do at that point?
Take Erick Flowers (OT) or a choice between Cooper / Kevin White. Shane Ray might be a choice or even Fowler. Take the BPA. Some really good talent left on the board easily.
First off, there's not a single OL in this draft worth taking in the top 8 picks. Secondly, we don't need to be using the number 6 pick overall on an OL regardless. Does our OL need help? Yes, but Brick is still decent and there's no chance of getting rid of him this season, so grabbing an OT at 6 would be stupid considering how many HUGE holes we have to fill. If this were NEXT season, and we could drop Brick's contract without killing our cap, then I'd be fine with it. But for THIS season, it would be dumb. And if I'm playing along with the game here, and ALL three of Winston, Mariota and Williams are off the board before our pick at #6, I'm STRONGLY considering trading back. I know we need a number 1 WR and could REALLY use a pass rushing OLB...but at this point in the game, I am not sure that I think any of those prospects are worth the number 6 pick overall. I guarantee you that someone will be in love with Ray/Gregory/Fowler/Cooper/White... enough to trade up for them, we just have to hope that we're the ones they trade up with. Best case scenario, Mariota is available at 6, the phone rings, Pettine is on the other end offering up picks 12 and 19 and we accept in a heart beat. Worst case scenario, we give up our entire draft to move up for a QB and he ends up Sanchizing us. In the middle, and most likely... we go safe and draft Randy Gregory/Shane Ray at number 6 and look to grab a CB or WR in round 2.
This guy has it figured out All the rest of these geniuses think we're going to pick an OT with 6th pick When: 1. We are clearly atleast adequate 2. No OT in this draft is worth it 3. And we have gaping holes elsewhere SMH
If we stay put I would take Fowler of the best pass rusher available. Looking at the list of the top 24 guys I would really prefer to trade back and try to end up with at least two of them instead of using our pick on just one guy. As far as OL goes, the combine might sort things out but there does not seem to be a consensus on the top five OL available. This would suggest that in the bottom half of round one or even with our second rounder we could score big by potentially taking one of the top 3 OL in the entire draft.
It's easy to say you want to trade back if what you want isn't there. But every sale needs a buyer. If you don't want what's there, there's nothing that says someone else will.
Fowler, Ray, Cooper, or Shelton will be there along with perhaps all of the OL and DBs. They are not as good bait as the QBs but someone will want to move up.
Is this your rating or someone's you read? The reason I ask is that you have Fowler a top 10 pick, but not Gregory and/or Ray, and I have seen both of them listed as likely top 10 picks and not Fowler.
My Plan "A" in this scenario would be to trade back and acquire more picks. This would allow the Jets to either draft one of the top WRs or a top o-lineman without overdrafting. My Plan "B" would be to take a pass rusher, if there isn't a good trade offer made. Before the combine, I would have thought that Gregory would be the first pass rusher selected, but he weighed-in at 235. I think Fowler would make the most sense right now for the Jets in this scenario.
I have to totally disagree with you. Topflight LT prospects frequently go in the top 10. A number of people seem very high on Flowers. I'm still studying him and not ready to make a determination, but he could be worth the #6. Peat has also been rated very highly. I'm not saying I'd take either at #6, but if the Jets did, the only way I'd be really upset is if Mariota was still on the board, they didn't view that OT as their future LT or took him solely out of need while they thought that one of the OLB prospects was a better player. Brick is only decent at this point. There's no way we can pay him over $14 million next year. If we get a new vet FA QB, or even if Geno is still starting, I don't want Brick protecting his blind side next season (2016). The smart thing to do is to get Brick's replacement now and groom him for next season. Quite possibly, that prospect could start at RT this season to get seasoning and experience, and they could move Giacomini inside which would help improve one of the OG positions. So taking their future LT would not be dumb or stupid. I definitely think that Cooper, Fowler and maybe White or Ray are worthy of the #6 pick. If Cleveland would give us their two #1s for the #6 pick (and perhaps another if the point totals don't work out right), then I'd have to seriously think about it. One isn't in a position very often to get an elite pass rusher. The last time we were in the position to get an elite pass rusher, was Gholston. A few years ago, we were in position to get a very good pass rushing OLB prospect and passed the opportunity up. We cannot do that again. While this draft is deep in 3-4 OLB prospects who actually have experience playing in a 3-4, if we get a shot at Fowler, we'd probably be nuts to pass it up. He has a relentless motor and with him, we probably wouldn't have to worry nearly as much about our secondary. Best case scenario is that Mariota is available at #6 and the Jets sprint to the podium laughing deliriously all the way and take Mariota. Trading the pick away would be the worst case scenario. You don't pass up an elite QB prospect. He may not be a Luck or Peyton, but from a mental/football IQ and work perspective, he's not far behind Peyton.
Gregory weighed in light for the combine, Ray is top 10. I had him in the top 10 but he could drop now. Fowler has been climbing the rankings and weighed in at 262 lbs.
With the exception of Dante Fowler, I don't want anything to do with the "other" highly rated pass rushers. But, I would take Lael Collins, IMO, he's going to be a tackle in the NF, and he displays a quick burst off the LOS and excellent hand placement and technique in general. He knows how to time his kick slides well, and he also displays polished footwork when pass protecting. Unlike Schreff he doesn't necessarily struggle with speed rushers or "open" his hips rapidly. My sscond option would be Kevin White.
Gregory is going to drop. I really liked this kid out of college, but he's going to get the Barkevious Mingo treatment, could still go in the top 10 though. Ray looks to be the top pass-rusher right now.
I think there's always a buyer, the problem is finding a buyer who's willing to pay enough to make it worth trading down.
