I just would like to point out that Mangini and company are calm and cool with the clock. Last year the Jets would have allowed Buffalo enough time left on the clock that they would have enough time to drive the field and score a few points before the end of the half. Mangini and company aren't afraid to let the clock wind down and then use their timeouts. That is something Herm and company seemed terrified to do. Thought? Comments?
With Edwards, they would have let too much time go off the clock. They would have had to settle for a FG. The TD pass to Baker would not have occurred.
I was stunned that we had all 3 of our timeouts with a minute left in the 2nd quarter--when's the last time that happened? Terrific stuff from Mangini.
that was my first observation on that end of the half series of events, how well the clock was managed, time outs were conserved, etc etc
His clock management was really there even in first game...I finally felt that my coach didnt need an extra old guy to whisper in his ear what to do with the clock.
As opposed to Loseman calling a TO at 2:02 in the 4th. We certainly have much better command of the clock now. Especially in crucial times. Now if we can just get rid of the prevent defense late in the 4th qtr.........
I never gave a second thought to clock management the entire game - which is precisely the point. What a wonderful change.
Yeah I was wondering myself why they called TO there. Also did anyone else find themselves screeming blitz at the TV at the end of the game?
How true! You know the coaching staff is doing a great job when time management is not even a concern. What a nice feeling!
I kept thinking to myself what a great job they did by letting the playclock run down in the 3rd Q when Buffalo had the wind at their backs.
Thats one thing that autimatically comes to the top of my head with differences between mangini and Edwards
My favorite was Chad's QB sneak on 4th & 1 to keep the clock rolling and milk more time off the clock... Nice call by Schottenheimer and great decision by Mangini.
That's a positive since Herm left, a negative is the insane amount of penalties and boneheaded penalties.
...is no longer an issue because our head coach isn't a rediculous quote spewing buffoon. The media can kiss my ass they might not be having fun but I'm having a ball.
I agree but when you play aggresive you are going to commit a few more penalties I didn't see too many penalties in the 2nd half and that horse collar tackle by Vilma was horse crap, what is he going to let the guy just run by and not make a play but the tripping call kind of offset that play.
You're right, the horse collar and the trip were two weak technical penalties that weren't really the players' fault. The one to take Vilma to task for was the PI on a 5 yard pass on 2nd and 20 that gave the Bills a first down. That was just inexcusable.
Am I the only one a little upset about the clock management circa end of 3rd & 4th quarter? I feel that we kept the clock stopped WAY too much, thus allowing them opportunities to come back with numerous possessions. I know we had almost NO running game, but we could have run the clock out a little more than we did during that period of time. We should have put the dagger in way before they could even think to make a come back. I feel that we have A LOT more room for improvement.
The "clock management" this thread is referring to is using the clock and TOs to the team's advantage especially at the end of each half.
I thought the tripping call was a good call. On the replay he clearly caught his foot on Cole's knee for the trip. I was impressed it was called but it was the right call. As for the Vilma call I agree the PI on a dump off pass pissed me off. At most Willis would have just caught it and Vilma would have put him right back down. The horse collar call was wrong to me at less it includes just grabbing the jersey on the shoulders and pulling a guy down because thats what I feel Vilma did.
