It's been a long time since the Jets drafted a plus player. Some of the guys from the last few drafts may turn into plus players but Darrelle Revis is the last guy the Jets drafted about whom there are no questions at all. That's 5 years ago, or longer than the career of the average NFL player. Part of the problem is that the Jets just don't draft a lot of players, so the opportunity to find plus players is more limited than it would be with a team making 7 picks a year. That's not Clinkscales fault, at least not that we know of.
Meh...Clinkscales. Who cares? Its not like he was great. Not bad, but nowhere near great either. Just average or maybe slightly above average. And it wasn't like he was the only person in our scouting team. Next one will hopefully be better than Joey.
Yeah, what an asshole! I hate these guys that up and leave for a better job! Selfish fuck cares more about his career and family than he does about the Jets... He's dead to me!
meh hire the GM attention whore Elway just sent packing to do what Colonel Klink did or, even better, replace Bradway who should have been canned years ago
I dont see this as a great loss, or really any sort of loss. Hope he enjoys life with the raiders, it shouldnt be quite the mad house it used to be.
http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/sto...draft-exec-leaves-oakland-raiders-sources-say according to this, it appears to be a promotion for Clink. Good for him. As for those arguing this isn't a big loss, I doubt it. The guy has been under consideration for a few GM positions the past few years (the Rams this year being the most prominent) Clink has done an excellent job helping us acquire quality talent via the draft, and has run the entire draft process for the Jets for the last 5 years. It's going to be an interesting transition period, and here's to hoping we can find a quality replacement for him ASAP.
It is telling that the last really good draft the Jets had was 2007...for whatever that is worth. Oh, and 2008 was when we took Gholsten in the 1st.
Can't evaluate a class until 3 years out so we'll see how good he truly was after this season when much of the year depends on the the play of Sanchez & Greene.
if given access to the scouting reports and inside information I can think of about half a dozen posters on trhis board I would trust to do a better job of drafting for the jets than the Jets have tended to manage for themselves the last 5 years.
Sometimes that is true but we knew right away what he had in 2006 and 2007. I think this year's might turn out good.
He can only scout them, it's up to Tanny and Rex to make the picks. We really don't know if they follow his recommendations.
Maybe the jets haven't had a player develop into a "Plus" since 2007..but they have brought in several "plus Prospects". I.E. Able to contribute in specific roles early w/ still plenty of upside to become impact players at their respected position;Specifically since 2009. Sanchez- Say what you will, but he has started since day 1, took this team to the playoffs twice & you'd like to think the arrow is still pointing up Greene- Again, similar to Sanchez.Contributed early, worked his way into a starter role, & still has a ceiling McKnight- Struggled early, worked his way into being a plus returner, & still has the ability to develop into a plus skill player in a specific role Slauson-Spent a year in the weight room, then stepped up & replaced a borderline hall of famer. Well on his way to being a solid fixture among this O-line. is he a pro bowler? No. But a solid selection for a 6th round pick Conner- Doesn't play a glamorous position & is a throwback player at a position with a changing skillset, but he has contributed since day 1 & started every game last year. Has he made strides as a lead blocker? He sure has. Can he get better?Absolutely Wilson- As far as I'm concerned, he's a plus player at nickel. He runs, he mirrors & he tackles. He wasn't gonna come in his first few years & unseat Cromartie or Revis. He gives the Jets arguably the best corner trio in the NFL. AND he's only gonna get better. Kerely- Westhoff compared him to OJ Mcduffie. That's a lofty comparison. Kerely was a monster in last year's training camp despite the lockout. He worked his way into being an effective slot reciever last year, beating out the aging Derrick Mason. Anyone object to the idea that he is gonna get better? Wilkerson- Started from day 1 on. Ended up w/ 13 plays made behind the line of scrimmage. For a rookie 5 technique who needs to spend sometime in the weight room..that is outstanding. In fact, i'd go as far as to say..in December, Wilkerson already WAS a plus player. W/ his frame, age(he's only 21) the position he plays, & with the addition of Coples..he has a ton of upside. Ellis- Contributed some w/ mixed results. Definitely showed the long term ability to play in the middle of Rex's D. He anchors extremely well & can move laterally. With time in the weight room, class room & practice field...where's the lack of upside? That 9/13 picks in a 3 year draft period that fit what a playoff contending team looks for in a draft.Immediate contributions, steady development & the ceiling to become an impact player. Not included in that are Ducasse who still has immense upside, Powell who we know very little about but many scouts were high on, & Mcelroy who as a 7th round pick could be the long term solution back up QB. Quite honestly, I couldn't be happier with the Jets drafts since 2009. It took awhile to accept Tanny's "Quality over quantity" mantra, but look at those results. The lone throw away prospect who has contributed nothing & displayed no long term potential is Scotty Mcknight who was a late 7th rounder. I stated all last season that it was a transition year. The main reason for that thought process was the notion of how many of the above listed players were beginning to fill larger roles on the team & needed time to further develop & learn consistency. All the talent is there for the above listed to take this team to new heights. now it's up to the coaching staff, training staff & the player's own work ethic to take their games to the next level.
Exactly. We know he got over-ruled on Gholston. It also should be noted that the Jets don't always get the players they want at certain spots. They may have very high grades on players taken 2-3 spots in front of them, and as a result, take a player they didn't like nearly as much. All Joey does is scout the players, and gives his recommendations, final call goes to Tanny. Who we drafted doesn't say much about his scouting ability beyond where we took them. Looking back at the recent drafts, I don't see a big reach anywhere. Which means he had the guys adequately rated in comparison to the NFL scout people. Don't give me the trash about Vlad Ducasse either. At the time of the draft, Vlad was a solid second round pick. hindsight is 20-20, but at the time, it was a good pick.
