"Much of the Jets' locker room conversation after the preseason-opening 31-16 win over the Falcons was about Kellen Clemens, who joined Rick Mirer (vs. Minnesota, 1999) and Ray Lucas (vs. Giants in 2000) as the only Jets to throw for three touchdowns in a preseason game since 1992." http://www.newyorkjets.com/posts/114-clemens-the-talk-of-the-locker-room And we all know how great those guys were.
His performance doesn't fill me with any significant confidence in him being it was one preseason game, but it was nice to see him do well. Hopefully he continues to get better and shows consistency. *disclaimer - this is not an actual RaiderJoe quote, it's paraphrased.
I think its more important that guys in the locker room were talking about his performance. That is the greatest way to give a young guy confidence.
I thought his passes looked a little shaky. Many of his success came on poorly thrown balls with good plays made by the receivers and some phantom pass interference penalties.
Clemens performed very well for a preseason game! That lollipop to Mccarren's was pretty scary and it seemed like it took 3 minuets to get there.
It might have something to do with his professional mentor? Some of his success also came from hanging in until the last second and getting the ball out in a hurry on target, something we aren't used to. He showed some signs which are very positive for this team. If Clemens isn't going to be a top NFL QB this team is years away from being elite.
Does anyone think that the Stuckey TD should not have been called a TD? From the endzone camera, it seemed like when he came down, he rolled over and the ball hit the ground. It was a nice attempt by stuckey, but I think it should have been called incomplete. I could be wrong, I only saw the replay once, but when I saw it I was sure it was a bad call.
Tentatively I agree with this because that what I seem to recall too. I'm downloading the game and plan to watch Clemens preformance again though. This may be true. Because of this, I think a lot of people are over hyping his preformance. He had a good stat line and did some good things no question, but it doesn't mean he's ready to lead this team to a SB. Hell it doesn't even mean he's ready to start.
that duck he threw that he got the PI call on was crazy! if youre gonna throw a fade like that you usually want to put it where only the wr can get it....i know (well, think at least) the reason he threw it there was the mismatch with smith on houston, but jesus christ...that ball should have been picked. i want to see him progress and get better (i think we all do) and hopefully by next year he is really ready to challenge for the starting job. he had a decent game, but hes getting blown up way too much by guys happy that a jet qb threw 3 tds in a game...we generally dont have chad throw 3 in 2 games.
i think that's part of it, but i think also (at least for me) it was nice to see him perform better than the press portrayed him at the beginning and throughout training camp.
I have to agree with some of the assessment. A couple of his throws were caught do to great effort by the WR, like the Stuckey TD. If the DB is looking, he will pick it. A few throws he made while being hit, could have been disastrous. But he is young, and some throws looked really good.
Your dislike for Pennington clouds your judgement at times. Pennington has weaknesses, but I never heard that one of his weaknesses was not hanging in the pocket. For instance, watch the great TD Cotchery scored vs the Pats last year at home and you'll see that Pennington threw that pass after he got hit and it was on a line and accurate, not floated up for grabs. As for the Jets being set back if Clemens is not the real deal, I disagree. Pennington is 31 and has 5-6 good years left if he stays healthy. Clemens will either start by year 3 or 4 or be gone and the Jets will be grooming the next successor by then. Where you and I differ is Pennington's ability to lead this team to a SB or not. I think he can and we all know where you stand.
Don't get me wrong, just because I don't think Pennington had great tools doesn't mean my judgement about Clemens is clouded. I hate his size and he sometimes has the posture of someone with zero confidence but at least last night we saw some of his quick release while being pressured and some real tools that big time QB's need. Is he the guy, I have no idea yet.
While I agree with you, how many championships did he help us win? By the way, here's something that will show you that Ray was always a Jet at heart. Just look at how he crushed the hopes and dreams of the evil and reviled Dolphins: http://www.thedolphinsmakemecry.com/rod-ray-lucas.html
im happy to see clemens put up some good numbers, i cant wait to watch the video online. Did he play scared?
Scared? Thanks to our Oline he saw some good pressure, and he did well. I love Chad, but i dont know. I know its one preseason game, but i wouldnt be that scared to see Chad go down. Not like i want to see that happen. Just saying.
Clemence made me feel better about the backup spot- just in case Chad goes down - but Chad is still the man to take us to the Super Bowl
