Kevin Mawae: Eric Mangini cut me for speaking out By RICH CIMINI DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Thursday, December 20th 2007, 4:00 AM Titans C Kevin Mawae knows why he was released last year by Eric Mangini: He's outspoken and probably would've clashed with the new coach. "The last thing you want is a guy that knows all the rules in there and I definitely would've been one of the guys to call him out on it," Mawae, formerly the Jets' union rep, said Wednesday on a conference call. "It all boils down to accountability. You want a player to be accountable and the player wants the coaches to be accountable, and I think that may have been an issue there." Mawae, 36, who made six Pro Bowls with the Jets, believes left guard Pete Kendall was jettisoned for the same reason. Hornet: I think money and age were a factor here, too. "They wanted to get young and get guys that weren't going to speak out against the staff, and obviously Pete didn't fit that mold," said Mawae, adding that he's heard second-hand that certain veterans on the Jets are unhappy under Mangini. Mawae faces his old team for the second time Sunday in Tennessee. OH, TANNENBAUM: With Bill Parcells apparently heading to a front-office position with the Dolphins, there is speculation he might try to lure prot?g? Mike Tannenbaum to be the GM. "I'm happy right where I am as general manager of the Jets and won't be going anywhere," Tannenbaum said. "Mr. (Woody) Johnson and Jay Cross have given me a great opportunity and this franchise has my full attention." Hornet: I think Tannenbaum stays GUARD DOWN: LG Adrien Clarke still was beating himself up for giving up the hit that knocked Kellen Clemens out of last Sunday's game with rib and shoulder injuries. "You feel terrible," he said. "Since it happened, I've felt that way. When I saw him (on the sideline), I told him, 'My bad.' I apologized, but I feel terrible. There is no other way to put it." Clarke better get his mind right for Sunday's game; he will face Pro Bowl DT Albert Haynesworth. Hornet: I will be sick if Adrian Clarke is here next year - he is practice squad material at best. SAY WHAT? Titans coach Jeff Fisher on the Jets: "They're the best 3-11 team I've ever seen." ...To replace DE Eric Hicks and OL Adrian Jones, both of whom were released Tuesday, the Jets signed OL Robert Turner and OL Clint Oldenburg from the practice squad. ... SS Kerry Rhodes thought he had a shot to make the Pro Bowl. "Not as much as last year, but it was definitely there," he said. Rhodes, coming on strong after a slow start, was named the third alternate. ...WR Laveranues Coles (ankle) practiced on a limited basis and will try to play even though he's not close to 100%. "I've probably spent more time in the trainer's room this year than I have my whole career combined," he said. "It has been very frustrating."
I think they were a big factor. So do I. You should feel bad you lousy sack of shit. Try standing in FRONT of an oncoming defender once in a while. Umm, thanks Jeff. No go back to shutting the F*** up. Thanks. So those guys were released to promote practice squad guys, and it wasn't some great conspiracy by Mangini late in the season to send a guy to Herm? Damn. I was really enjoying that thread. And Coles should sit this week. And next week. Why play hurt man? You've earned your stripes.
The only way Clarke stops Haynesworth is if we take one of our bigger players not necessarily a true fullback and give him the resposnsibility of running at Haynesworth all day. Haynesworth will eat Clarke alive and Chad is in real desperate chance of being very injured during the game. I will be biting my nails the whole game just hoping Chad doesn't get injured. I could care less whether we win.
I know Chad will never do this, but he should practice the Favre laydown for Strahan move this week. It simply is not worth getting pummelled at this point and I know Haynesworth is frothing at the mouth after watching tapes of Clarke's technique.
I couldnt believe that Seymour came in so fast on that play virtually untouched. I rewound the TEVO about 8 times to see if Clarke actually laid a hand on Seymour at all. First time in watching football that I've ever seen a D-Lineman from the tackle position go untouched. I can't even believe that the guy was still on the roster after that. It made me even more furious about how the FO f--ked up by not getting the least bit competent replacement after they jettisoned Kendall.
The FO completely over-rated the talent level on our offensive line going into this season. Not sure it was a pure mistake or gloating on the euphoria of being in the playoffs last year. The FO better do big things to corect our offensive line woes in the off-season though FA and the draft or I think it is time to say goodbye to a coach and a GM (Boobway goes too). The offensive line problems are just too out in the open to be ingored, even by the most inexperienced coach and player evaluation staff.
And I thought he picked up and drove Clemens into the ground, which is a major roughing the passer call. Alas, no flag.
Even as a die hard Jets fan I have to say Seymour's hit was clean. He put his shoulder right on Clemens' 11 (even on the low side). He was never near the head at all. Clemens was still very much in the act of throwing when the hit occurred, hence the balloon ball that was easily picked off. It was a bad hit because they guy came in virtually untouched like a locomotive almost as if Clarke received payola from Bellichick before the game.
What has Adrien Clarke done for the Jets this season so far? Let's see: 1. Prematurely ended Chad's career with the Jets. 2. Made Thomas Jones and Leon Washington miserable. 3. Gotten Kellen Clemens sidelined by injury. That's quite a trifecta for a guy who wasn't sure he'd even make an NFL roster in July.
It wasn't the hit that was dirty. It was the subsequent lift and drive into the turf. The INT was just because Clemens was trying to get rid of the ball. Avoid the 2, give up 6. The way he was driven into the ground was wrong. Your point stands that he should never have had that sort of chance, but he was still in the wrong on the tail end of the play.
The thing that you continue to confuse yourself with is the helmet. The helmet has nothing to do with it. Stop talking about the helmet. It is inconsequential. Of course it was a clean hit. Just as clean as the Hobson hit that was called for 'driving the QB' into the turf. What is so confusing about this? There were a ton of non-calls on both sides, but this is the one that makes the refs look like they're protecting Brady.
