I noticed jets beat writer Rich Cimini spent half of his weekly article talking up jets reserve center Norm Katnik. Picked up off SF practice squad last year, Katnik finished the year with the jets. Although undersized, Katnik could be our center of the future if he bulks up, at least according to Rich... Anyone know anything else about this guy? Was he drafted? Rookie free agent? Where'd he from? Any good...or is this just the usual hype to fill a column in the off-season?

He was 1 of 6 finalists for the 2003 Dave Rimington Trophy, third team All-America and first team All-Pac 10 Conference.

    Cimini?

Since when did he become an evaluator of talent. If the guy was so good why didnt we play him to see his abilities in a lost season where we didnt have Mawae and Kendall struggled? WHY OH WHY didnt we see the great Katnik? You would have thought that in a season where we werent going anywhere we would have played at least a little bit . Seriously guys, I think that we should worry about drafting Mangold or Eslinger and not worry about what Katnik, may and may not do for us. Jet fans always worry about players like this, remember Harry Williams? and contless other players who many thought might be stars? they never did.

Cimini is reporting what the front office is evaluating. The team likes Katnik, not Cimini. Asking why we didn't see him last year is useless, Herm probably doesn't even know who is on his practice squad.

Oh yeah, and Harry Williams was a project WR who came from an incredibly small school, and barely had any catches. Katnik was the STARTING CENTER for a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP team, was 1st team All-Pac-10, and 3rd team All-American. Even bringing up Williams in the same sentence as Katnik is laughable.

    Laugh at this

"Katnik was the STARTING CENTER for a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP team, was 1st team All-Pac-10, and 3rd team All-American. Even bringing up Williams in the same sentence as Katnik is laughable. "

And where was Katnik darfted? and how many times did he see the playing field? You make it seem like Katnik is some sort of all pro, Compared to Harry Williams, he is exactly the same guy, NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO PLAY FOR THE JETS!!!! If Katnik is so much better than Williams you would have thought that he might have at least PLAYED in ONE GAME.

I'll rely on what the professionals think, and they like Katnik as a starting center in the NFL. He has the track record to justify it, unlike Harry Williams.

I think because he was really small, like 270-275. Last I read, he's well into the 290's now.

I don't think anyone proclaimed him "the great Katnik." What's your problem, anyway?

If he has in fact increased his weight to the 290's, he might be worth taking a chance on. He performed well at USC. That gotta be worth something, doesn't it?

Ummmmm Kevin Mawae is listed at 285 on the Titans roster for all you stat guru's...and he was one of the best centers over the last 10 or 15 years.

Personally, I would take a CHANCE on a guy that was a starter on the USC offensive line and was as decorated as he was. Doesn't mean he's the next coming of Olin Krutz but hell...who is...AND....name me 5 TOP Offensive linemen that have been drafted in the 1st round that are even close to pro-bowl calibur over the last 5 years. It is common knowledge you find these guys in the later rounds...Personally I can only think of 2 or 3......

Give the guy a chance...and by the way...one of the big knocks on Herm, myself included, was his loyalty to veterans...very few young guys had much of a chance unless it was an absolute necessary....unless you were drafted 4 and 12...know what I'm saying??

    peace!

boy asscue, you really have your panties in a bunch everytime someone mentions katnik. You are a joke. If you see a Katnik thread, maybe it's best for you not to click on it
