Gholston & McKelvin set for pre-draft visits

The Jets will host a couple of very important visitors next week. Ohio State DE/OLB Vernon Gholston (April 14 and 15) and Troy State CB Leodis McKelvin (April 16) will be stopping by for pre-draft visits with team officials.

Most mock drafts have the Jets, selecting sixth overall, taking the ultra-athletic pass rusher from Ohio State. But there?s a chance he?ll be gone. What then? From what I?m hearing, McKelvin could come into play if the top five falls a certain way.

For argument?s sake, let?s say DE Chris Long, Gholston, DT Glenn Dorsey, RB Darren McFadden and QB Matt Ryan are gone.

Instead of taking OT Jake Long, the last of the so-called top six, I think the Jets could lean toward a need pick and select McKelvin. They?re also high on Dominique Rogers-Cromartie.

Ideally, they could trade down a couple of spots - the Ravens (8th) and the Bengals (9th) have needs on the line and could use Long - and take one of the two corners. Long is a terrific prospect, but the Jets have five capable starters and a ton of money already invested in the line.

Let?s face it, the Jets need a lot of help at cornerback, even with Darrelle Revis, last year?s first-round pick. They unloaded Andre Dyson and Hank Poteat is floating in free-agent limbo, leaving Revis, David Barrett, Drew Coleman and recently signed retread Andre Woolfolk. Truth is, the Jets need at least two more competent corners to compete against the Patriots? spread-the-field passing attack.

The secondary, quarterback and wide receiver are the only areas the big-spending Jets haven?t addressed in the offseason. (Sorry, I don?t count Woolfolk as a significant move.) Maybe that will provide some clues about their drafting strategy.

I'd be pissed if the team passed on BPA Jake Long and took a guy like McKelvin, someone who I've seen noted on here would have fallen behind the big 3 CB's from last year as far as draft position.

OT is still a need. I'm not sold on Woody and if you're able to land a guy like Long you shift Woody to RG, solidifying your line for well into the next few years.

Gholston and McKelvin are the only 2 players I want on this team, Gholston first and McKelvin if he is gone. However, if somehow Jake Long falls to us (I doubt it), I would be happy with that pick as well. Just no DMC or Matt Ryan please.

I agree. If Jake Long is there you take him. Putting him at RT gives you 3 young, dynamic, and talented Olinemen for 10+ years. With veterans inbetween showing them the ropes. Passing on him would be insane.

Outside of some promise which he showed right before his injury, Miller hasn't done a thing to distinguish himself as worthy of the starting CB title.

Alot of the folks like to throw around the "it takes time for CB's to develop" argument. BS I say- when you're good, it shows pretty quickly- take our own CB's from NY last year, Revis having missed nearly all of TC and even Aaron Ross of the Giants, who both came into their own quite nicely.

Miller's path hasn't been nearly as rosy...

I still have high hopes for Justin Miller. His attitude before his injury seemed to hint at a higher level of maturity and concentration. I still doubt he will turn out to be anything good but I still hope he can prove most of us wrong.

Besides...look at my avatar. Justin Miller is cool just because of that picturel

Yeah i totally agree with that statement, but i think that if Matt Ryan was the guy on the board and Jake Long went in the top 5 as expected, then we would say well Mckelvin is the BPA so we should take him. I also agree that he doesnt project to be even as good as Revis who we got at 14 a year ago. Hopefully someone would come calling for our 6 spot to nab Sedrick Ellis. Otherwise you really dont have a choice valuewise other than to take Mckelvin or DRC. You could reach for a guy like Limas Sweed, or Derrick Harvey, but we would be booed out of the Radio City Music Hall. so a trade down, or a viking like "pass" is our best bet if we get stuck in the situation.

"Dude" where did I say that you had made a remark about Miller being "special?"

I just gave an opinion when you asked about Miller. Maybe I should be asking if you are the one who can read...

And that pretty much sums up Cimini's reporting. He's good at reporting news, but whenever he has to inject any opinion or do some actual thinking, he comes up way short.

Getting kicked to IR does that. People forget how good he looked both in pre-season (even after the hamstring pull) and the beginning of the season.

I'd love a trade down to acquire more picks and build for the future replacements for Faneca, Woody, etc. I agree with RobA: no DMC or Matt Ryan.

Whether it's a first rounder or not, we do need a 1st day CB. I wouldn't mind taking McKlevin or DRC at #6, but I would much rather trade down into the mid-to-late first and take Jenkins or Talib, and get an extra 2nd. Either way, I don't want David Barrett starting again. I wouldn't mind someone like Justin King, Flowers, or Cason in the 2nd either. I don't understand why the Jets aren't negotiating with Poteat, he was pretty decent last year and is better than what we currently have at #2 CB.

OK first of all, Jake Long is the only LOCK to go top 5, i mean really no way in hell the chiefs would pass on him if he got there, but if the top 5 falls where Dorsey gets left out, i say we take him. After we take him we could get some sick trade offers for him and if we dont we just play him as 3-4 end.

DRC should be the guy if they plan on taking a CB in the 1st. He is probably as good as or better than his cousin Antonio.

Talib gambles way too much and he got toasted plenty in college by mediocre receivers.

If Jake Long falls to the Jets they'll snap him up in a minute. He would make the offensive line even better and you can't have enough good linemen. Long is a beast.

Cimini is simply being a journalist and not a sports analyst. He does not have first hand information on Andre Woolfolk. Yes, I am being a bit biased but he gave no reasoning for his low blow to Andre. The Titans lost faith in Andre because of injuries and that is it plain and simple. They did not want to continue to build believing that he would get injured again. This is evident because he was playing a pro-bowl caliber game when he suffered THE INJURY - meaning the one where Fisher turned his back on him forever. Game 9 2005 vs the Arizona Cardinals... Andre was singled up man for man with Larry Fitzgerald (Fitz's Pro Bowl rookie year). The QB (McNown), threw to Fitz five times in the late second quarter, with Andre covering with minimal safety help (Cardinals were running it down the run stopless Titans throats)... 3 times downfield... 3 Pass defenses in which Andre made Fitz pay (I have pics).. 2 times on short passes resulting in net 7 yards (-2 yards and 9 yards). During that span, Andre had 3 open field tackles on RBs that had broken the Titans then pathetic defensive line and linebackers.... On the last of those tackles on a RB in the third quarter, Andre had a major pull of a ham string that sidelined him for 4 games. The Titans name Reynaldo "Toast" Hill the starter at that point without hesitation stating he would remain. The next season, the Titans boasted they had their starting corners Hill and Pac... Pac self destructed and Hill was demolished by every team they played... Next season after that, Andre re-injured himself day 2 of camp, was put on IR two weeks into preseason and released just prior to the last cut with a injury settlement. He is healthy now, has the know how and experience having played strong on the likes of Derrick Mason, Fitzgerald, but had bad outings vs Marvin Harrison and Torre Holt (who doesn't - even Champ Bailey struggles vs them)...

I strongly believe his play during camp and pre-season will completely discredit Cimini's skeptic remarks and hopefully Cimini will come back with a repentive column giving Andre credit.....

The real issue will be if Woolfolk can stay healthy long enough to make his mark.

So far, that's been a problem.

He was selected 28th overall however, so at some point he knew what it takes.
