Olave just crushed the 40 at the combine running a 4.26. I'm all in on the Jets getting him if he slides to 10 which I doubt. With those numbers he probably off the board.
Okay he can run. Can he catch? Can he run routes? Also will keep this here for a while and then move to Draft forum evantually
He Is very technically sound. Strong route runner. Extremely good deep threat, best tracker of the ball In the draft. Very fast. Good hands. Weak at the point of attack at times. I still like Wilson better. Olave Is a first round talent though for sure.
"If Olave slides to 10" Olave is going late teens to early 20s. The NFL released official 40 times; Wilson ran a 4.38, Olave ran a 4.39.
He's kind of a string bean. I like Burks and London because they have the frame to beast on corners run-blocking. I don't see the fit.
combine numbers are useful but don't get hypnotized by them. If you check fastest 40s over the years they're littered with a lot of "Who is that?"s and if you think about it even if 40 yards were a meaningful distance (debatable) you're talking a tenth or two of a second. It's far more important at that stage to have a brain, good technique, good hands, good chemistry, toughness etc. i think the combine attracts dumb money -- causing teams to overpay in draft capital for a lot of useless stuff. (ANd don't get me started on the bench press)
I heard some draft nik say while there are no mega-dogs in this WR draft class (like A+++ Chase last year) this draft class is loaded with A and A- guys. Teams will get good, legit WRs throughout the 1st and 2nd rounds. So maybe trading down from 10 and picking up an additional 2nd round pick may be a good strategy?
If the Jets trades back from 10, where would you feel comfortable dropping to and still be able to select him?
actually he didn't it was a 4.39. official numbers come out later when the tape is reviewed. still a good showing though. I thought he was gonna run a 4.45ish Olave is the opposite of a combine warrior though. he wasn't expected to do well at the combine but he's a great route runner and technician but wasn't seen as particularly fast and he isn't the biggest or strongest guy. he's like a better amon-ra st brown
it does seem to be very deep. there are guys in the top 4 rounds who could all wind up good. like a group for each round. there just isn't a pure stud.
I might be dead wrong, but IMHO with such an extensive group of good to great WR this year, there is little chance that the top 4 , say Burks, London, Wilson and Olave will be all gone by pick number ten. I say this because teams before us have far bigger needs than WRs and three of those are in dire need of a QB. So if the QB hype heats up one or more teams could pull the plug and move up in desperation. So our tenth pick is absolutely golden right now for a great player and our 4th is looking more and more it could be worth a small fortune if someone wants to jump the Giants. In any event, we should absolutely finish day one walking away with two, or even three on a trade, immediate contributors and difference makers. The fact that we really don't know which way JD and Co are aiming makes this draft even more interesting and to me a can't miss event. I plan to be in Vegas with my Jets Jersey on, rooting my heart out when we are on the clock, thinking how many at TGG will jump for joy and how many will go suicidal depending on what JD does. Cant wait.
As I posted in the other thread on FA WRs, and the possibility that Dallas wants to unload Amari Cooper's 20MM contract, getting Cooper would change the draft calculus. WE no longer would absolutely have to get a stud WR with our first 2, or maybe even first 4, picks. But getting Cooper might well make taking Olave a good move.
