ME and a friend have been debating about who would get more touches this year if both are healthy. I say CJ he says Ivory. What do you guys think? I dont think either will get way more touches than the other but i do think CJ is going to be our primary RB. If CJ can get anywhere near his old self with a new revamped (and way better IMO) supporting cast i think he has a chance of being the steal of the off-season. They should compliment each other just fine though.
Johnson Let me elaborate. I think Chris Johnson will get majority of the carries because he is an all around better back. If he is 100% healthy, it's hard to deny him carries. I also think that while Johnson will get majority carries, Ivory will get the hard yardage and be a goal line/3rd down back. Ivory is a downhill runner that pounds people. His style of running will make his career very short if he continues with the work load. The best way to use Ivory is to put him in situations where powering through people is needed. He is also very lethal when used against a tiring defense. He can hit people like a freight train, thus making him even more difficult to tackle. In all honesty, I think Johnson and Ivory compliment each other perfectly. One is very elusive and fast while the other is a down hill heavy hitter. I love Ivory to death, but I think Johnson should be the featured back. His style of running will do wonders in keeping Ivory on the field.
I think it depends if you are talking touches or carries. I think CJ is too good in the passing game to not be involved on that end, Ivory is much less so. I think they will split carries pretty closely with Ivory getting the slight edge but CJ gets more involved in the passing game and edges out Ivory in touches. Maybe that's splitting hairs a bit but I think the bottom line is that if they are both healthy it's going to be close. I don't think either will be hands down the feature back and the other used as 3rd down or situational.
CJ because he'll play more snaps since he can catch. It will be close though, particularly if the Jets are actually good. If the Jets are good, and get 4th-quarter leads, Ivory will be used a lot more.
I hope I'm wrong, but I think CJ or Ivory are going to miss multiple games and/or just not going to be as effective as we want them to be due to injury. Ivory has been injury prone and CJ is just getting older. However, we are in good shape with also Powell. I don't think people realize this, but BP has averaged 4 yards per carry the past 2 seasons along with a decent amount a receiving yardage. If they can all stay healthy I think Marty is going to have a nice little 3 headed monster at his disposal.
Who it's hard to say. It may be team specific, based on the game plan and what style of running will do the best against a certain defense. I can see CJ getting the call in one game, then Ivory the next. Any though to having them both in the backfield? Can CJ run the WC? Powell can so maybe we see us some Powell/CJ back there together.
Ivory will get more carries, but CJ will be in on more plays. Ivory led the league in yards after contact last year, and unless the run blocking improves a good deal, CJ will struggle to get the space he needs for big runs. CJ will be great for passing downs, and he may end up catching a lot of passes, but I don't see him being the bell cow given the o-line's struggles with run blocking.
Powell may beat out both if their injury histories play out. But I say CJ because of the pass catching along with carries.
Not as bad as Ivory, but: "Coming off January surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, Johnson has been participating in individual drills, but has been held out of team drills in minicamp. "-USA Today.
Injury history? You realize Chris Johnson has missed 2 games in his entire career? A torn meniscus that was repaired in the offseason and caused him to miss zero games is not "injury history".
As last season went on I really came to admire Ivory's approach to the game. Count me as a big fan of his (meaning even bigger than since following him in NO). But I recognize Johnson brings more options in the offense, especially since catching the ball is not Ivory's strength. But who will get it more? Depends on too much to say right now. In fact they could be pretty equal, as others have noted they do complement each other well.
It should be Ivory getting the ball more as he is younger, has less mileage, and is much stronger... Ivory gets better as the game goes on... If he only comes in in goal line situations, or only some 1st downs, we are wasting him... The strategy should be to pound the defenses with Ivory the majority of the game to get them tired, and then bring CJ out to bust holes through the tired defense.
I predict Johnson is going to be the best pickup of the offseason. He's going to have a big year. By the end of the season Ivory will be an after-thought. Johnson has played his very best in his career when he's had a chip on his shoulder and/or when he is playing for a contract. The Jets got him at a time when he has both going on- very much ideal. I like his approach this offseason and I think he's going to run like hell for this team... plus this offense is favorable to him catching the ball out of the backfield. This was a great pickup by Idzik and I'm normally skeptical when it comes to this team.
Lol yeah i almost forgot that there is a VERRRY long list of non existant injuries -___- . He never gets hurt last year was his first real injury n he played through it (very good through it at that)
I like Ivory a lot but he reminds me a little too much of Marion Barber III, who was out of the league at age 28 because of his bruising style. It's just not logical to expect longevity out of a human battering ram.
Yeah, he's the comparison I use a lot. Ivory does have a bit of an injury history, but it's stiff that doesn't really involve heavy contract, which is a concern in itself, considering the way he runs. I think the Jets can get a couple more decent years out of him, but they need to be constantly looking for fresh legs everywhere. No long term contract for anyone but maybe Powell, who would be inexpensive, is an all around player and won't get a ton of mileage. But that long term contract would be stipulated by backup duties while the NYJs continue to stock the front runners with new players.
