I don't think this has been discussed enough. The guy is averaging over 5 yards per carry, but is only getting about 10 carries per game. He is by far the best player on our offense. Now, I understand the injury concerns, but is limiting his carries worth having an ineffective offense? Take for example the Lions game. He ended up with 17 carries. At first glance, you go, "Good, he got some solid touches." You must remember 9 of them came on the first drive. Do you think it was a coincidence that the offense was ineffective for the rest of the game? Go back further to the Packers game. We were in Lions territory with plenty of time and still decided to throw. It was third and short on a number of occasions giving us 2 downs to pick up firsts that Ivory would have surely gotten. Hell, when we were in the redzone, he would have had a chance to score. He literally disappeared in the fourth, and not by his will. MM simply didn't play him. Look at the ineffectiveness of Chris Johnson. He's made one memorable play this year and even that was a run that most RBs could have made (Lions). Powell has been solid as always but he's stuck behind that bum. The guy's done... You may point to a stacked box. I immediately call bulshit. Ivory has still averaged over 5 a carry. He shit on the Lions despite them having a top 5 front 7. At this point, idk what Marty is thinking. Ivory needs AT LEAST 20 TOUCHES per game. Treat him like the feature back that he is. If he gets hurt, so be it. We're 1-4.
I don't think anyone could possibly disagree. he's our best runner right now, he needs to get the ball more. we should be riding him to take pressure off the QB. the RB rotation has definitely hurt our offense.
I liked the CJ signing and I still do. The way we are using him I don't agree with. He should be a receiving outlet for Geno and being split out wide, not an in the tackles guy. Any signing can be bad if you don't leverage their talent.
You're right but the play calling has to be a lot better. It's not just more running plays but when you call them. You don't call a run when they put extra guys in the box and not all the time on first downs. I'd like to see more swing passes esp to Johnson who can break one at any time.
I think he would get more carries if Marty didnt change his gameplan as soon as we start trailing. But I also have concerns that Ivory isnt a guy that can handle a 20 carry game every week. He's a bruiser back. When guys like him get 10 carries it has the feeling of 20.
I totally agree, but unfortunately, we don't have the type of OC who is going to get that done for us. Too pass-happy.
I don't think he's saying CJ needs more carries. I think he's relating to how he's being used. CJ is built on speed and agility. He's an edge rusher and a great pass catching back. He's not a between the tackles runner and MM had been consistently trying to make him run between the tackles.
They need to use Ivory and Powell on all running plays and Chris Johnson on passing plays where they can run screen passes and swing passes to him. Johnson up the middle has not been good.
I don't know. Maybe the reason Ivory is averaging 5 yards a carry is because only getting 10 carries a game. He does run hard but a lot of times it looks like he isn't patient and instead of trying to wait for holes he just barrels into folks. That's fine and dandy for getting 10 carries a game but maybe he's not meant to get 20+ carries a game. I expected more from Johnson and he's not the player he was but I don't think they are using him right. They need to get him out in space. Also, if you are going to give him the ball between the tackles he's the type that needs to get the legs churning first. Put the QB under center and Johnson 3 or 4 yards back and hand it off so he gets a running start. The Zone read option that Morningweg is obsessed with where they are out of the shotgun and he just hands it off to a standing Johnson is really stupid for him. But really I'd try to get him out in space more. Pitches, tosses, screens, even as a quasi WR. Also, they need to run the ball more in general though. They have moderate success and then they stop. Nothing wrong with 4 yard rushes all day - churning the ball down the field using clock. Also, don't tell me it's because they get behind early. They still need to be more patient. Look at Houston last night- down 24-0 early and they stuck to the game plan running the football. They almost came back and won.
He's not the only guy in the league who runs that aggressively. And his vision is 10x better than Johnson's. Johnson is the guy who looks like he's running into walls. The reason it looks like Ivory is impatient at times is because he hits the hole hard. It doesn't matter how he's getting the yards as long as he's getting them. We won't know what exactly he can handle unless we give him a chance to handle it. You could say the same thing about Ivory having to run out of the gun, but he gets the yards regardless. Johnson had a low per carry average last season, he'll have one this season as well. The guy is done.
They have to stop running out of shotgun. Ivory is taking a counter step every time and the play is a draw from shotgun, it's disgusting. Need to be running with a lead blocker and playing from qb from under center consistently. No more shotgun, spread bullshit.
Truth. If the Jets had the weapons to make a shotgun pass happy offense work, that would be one thing. Maybe it will even be a little different with a healthy Decker, but right now we have to depend on what we have, which is the RB platoon. Geno has got to make their lives easier by taking more snaps under center. They need to spend every practice snap working on this, until they can make it happen. Despite Ivory's success running the ball, we have run basically no play action.
