They will play second fiddle to the shitty ass Rams in a city that doesn't even really want either team.-just because another city didn't want to use public funding to build them a castle. Hell of a legacy for the Spanos'. 32 years of ownership, 32 years of mediocrity. 0 Super Bowls and now you are the Rams' bitch
Not good, Chargers belong in San Diego. Feel bad for the fans, LA does not deserve one football team let alone two.
You would think that the Chargers would use that as an example for why this is going to end badly. I certainly find it truly idiotic that an NFL franchise would try to make the case that they can't afford to build their own stadium in a city where they are one of only two games in town (along with the Padres).
I grew up in Portland and have lived in Oakland and San Diego. If you'd have told me that Portland would have ended up with more pro sports teams than those two cities.... I'd have told you to get your head examined. (Shakes head)
Evan brought up a decent point this morning in saying it may have been somewhat of a calculated gamble in moving there. Hoping that the city starts to hurt without the Chargers revenue and changes their mind on building a new stadium. Either way, I don't get the fascination with LA with either franchise. It reminds me a bit of the Nets moving to Brooklyn and how I imagine that their ticket sales are just awful after being non competitive for so long. Just because the market is large doesn't automatically mean interest. Same reason why I see Vegas as an extremely risky proposition for an NHL team to try to sell that city on 41 home games. An NFL team would do muuuch better, and that's why they'll get a team sooner than later. It's a good business move IMO. The Chargers in a 30,000 seat stadium that has no interest in the franchise is going to be an utter disaster.
The Chargers have a much better team moving forward than the Rams do, yet they're going to play second fiddle. Why move to Carson? Why not just stay in San Diego until Rivers retires and assess what you have after that? The Chargers actually have some pretty good pieces moving forward in Bosa, Melvin Gordon, Hunter Henry, Inman, Keenan Allen, Denzel Perryman, etc. and the roster is extremely young. I'm perplexed by the decision. It could and probably will blow the fuck up in Spano's face. Maybe he sells to Mark Cuban or a better businessman that does the franchise right after this disaster.
That is exactly what it comes down to and that is his plan. He's just looking to get out the game and cash the fuck out on his way. The Clippers sold for $2 billion. An L.A. football team that plays in that palace new stadium for virtually nothing every year? shit- you got yourself some equity right there. Spanos will stick around until 2020 or so when the Chargers are established in the new stadium and then sell them for billions. He don't care about the people of San Diego or football or anything, this is the quickest way to make some bones! that's why all these owners push for new stadiums, valuation of their property to eventually sell. Its a real estate venture more than operating a sports franchise business
I just feel bad for Rivers in all of this. The franchise looks to be on the rise and now he has to deal with this shit as the franchise continues to be a bit of a laughing stock with their 'business' moves. There's a reason Archie wanted Eli nowhere near that ownership group. I give him credit for being that loyal though. He could easily say get me the eff out of here. I know he needs to suck it up with the family and that's a big reason he hasn't made the move, but cmon Phil. Try to get that ring!
I find myself rooting for the NFL to fail more and more as time goes by... I feel bad for SD fans, and despite the chance for Spanos to greatly increase the value of his asset, it just seems so wrong for football. I'm very interested to see what the PSL prices will be for the Rams and Chargers in that new stadium, and if they can sell them all. At least here there were two teams with a long track record of fan loyalty within its market. I can't see them selling a stadium full of PSL's X's two.
Chargers and/or Rams will be out of LA in ten years or less unless the NFL decides to subsidize them because they have to have a team in LA. I lived in LA in the early to mid 80's and a very small % give a shit about NFL football. There is way too much to do there and the weather is too nice to watch football on TV on a beautiful day. I was able to get playoff tickets against the Raiders in 82, good seats at face value the day before the game. It also looks like the Raiders have filed to move to Las Vegas.
