My first Jets jersey might just have #1 WESTHOFF on it, tbh. His personality will be sorely missed come next season..
Though you know the PFT headline will be about a Jets coach disrespecting former Giants Super Bowl winning DC...blah blah blah.
Westhoff will be sorely missed next season. You have to appreciate the candor. Let's win it all this season for him. Lombardi Trophy= Best retirement gift EVER!!!
Damn, it's gonna be a sad day when Westhoff retires. Not just a great coach but an incredible personality. Great interview, he delivered the kind of answers that increase the football IQ for all its readers.
Apparently he thinks John Harbaugh was a better pick as the HC over Rex also. His opinions on OC's and DC's seems to be that they don't have a handle of anything but the side of the ball they deal with. Even though he picks Spagnola as his example to disparage.... Q: John Harbaugh was a long-time special teams coach, and Baltimore took a leap when it made him a head coach. Yet all the guy's done is make the playoffs in all four of his years there, including two conference championship games. Why, then, aren't more special teams coaches considered head coaching candidates? Westhoff: Because the media picks the candidates, and they believe the offensive and defensive coordinators are the reason for success. What they really don't know is that some of those guys have no clue how to run a game. Clock management? They have no clue. Personnel makeup? They have no idea how to pick an active 45 during the week.
Actually he didn't say that at all. He said SOME OC's and DC's have no clue. He didn't say REX had no clue and he didn't say Harbaugh was a better pick. It's more fun to make things up though.
OK, who did Harbaugh get the job over? He clearly believes Harbaugh was the right choice. What would be the biggest critiques of Rex so far? Game and clock management? Personnel makeup? Just sayin...
Westhoff answered the question that was asked. It had nothing to do with Rex. You're framing it that way. Rex has done much better as a head coach than the guy he used as an example of a failed DC -> HC.
Saying he makes a good choice of a HC, doesn't mean he makes a BETTER head coach. Stop thinking so black and white -- I know the thought of them both being good head coaches is absolutely mind boggling, but it's probably what he meant, more so than harbaugh is a better coach than Rex.
Bumping this thread, as a must read for any football fan. Love his idea for kickoffs, although i like 30 yd line is better than 25. The 35 yd line as it currently stands flat out sucks.
