As we all know, the current CBA will expire on March 5th. If we don't reach an agreement or an extension, it will affect this year's draft.

First, don't worry the draft will be on April 28 - 30 this year.

If free agency (CBA) hasn’t begun by draft day, teams will not be able to trade players for draft picks. So there would be no trades like ...the Leon Washington trade last year.

Also, at the end of the draft, there would be NO signing of free agents. Something that is vital in getting some talented undrafted players. Jamaal Westerman was a signing a few years back.

Draft picks this year, especially in later rounds, will be very important and teams may want to trade down to acquire more late round picks. Teams will still be able to make trades for picks, but not players, as I mentioned.

Another question, I know that when a player gets drafted he is kind of just assigned a rookie minimum contract with no guaranteed money. But that's a contract, which cant happen. So what would happen then?

They would not be getting contracts, teams would just be claiming the rights to deal with them for their rookie contracts. Once free agency starts, only the team that drafted them will be allowed to deal with them. It's going to work like a pause button.

    Cato is correct.

Without a CBA, there will be no contracts, draft picks can't receive a contract. The team drafting that player holds their rights, but are in limbo until an agreement is reached.

Draft picks are going to be a premium this year. It may be difficult to trade down, cause teams don't want to give up quantity over quality.

Not sure if I agree with the late round picks being more valuable. I mean at some point when an agreement is reached with the cba all the undrafted players can then be signed. There's no advantage or disadvantage for anyone. The only issue would be not getting these guys in camp and really evaluating them if the CBa goes into the offseason workouts or training camp but same can be said for draft picks.

We can agree to disagree, I see an advantage having more picks in later rounds without a CBA.

Eh, I feel like they're always looking to pick up extra picks anyway possible. They also had to rebuild their defense since the main guys on that squad were getting older.

Curious (I doubt this will happen but who knows). Let's say it gets closer and closer to the "start of the season" (September or August) and there's still no CBA, and now these sorta educated kids who really are gambling that their future is to play football (both drafted kids and undrafted kids) now are scared and desperately searching for an income.

Start with drafted kids first- Can a league like the CFL or the UFL (I think that's the league) offer those kids contracts?

And also, to the extent kids aren't drafted, I imagine the CFL and other leagues will go after them, how does this affect PS and other shit?

The more I think about this, the more I HATE this likely upcoming lockout even more.

It's interesting...they say if they do not play in 2011, Carolina gets another #1 in the 2012 draft.

All draft positions remain the same.

I find it impossible to believe there won't be any sort of football in 2011. I could see the CBA debacle stretch into June and maybe even into July. But I can't see these guys not getting their shit together before TC begins. There is simply too much money at stake and far too much money will be lost if this stretches beyond the draft, much less into TC and at the start of opening day.

That said if it somehow happens that we go a full year without football, Carolina stands the best opportunity to improve its roster by bringing in a stud this year, and Luck next year. Of course that could be 1/5 of their total salary cap if there is not rookie cap...
