Captain's Corner: Whitner, Schlegel & Draft By: Jerry Rudzinski Date: May 2, 2006 The fact that so many Buckeye players were drafted on day one of the NFL draft was not a surprise. Where they were drafted, however, did open some eyes, particularly in the cases of Donte Whitner and Anthony Schlegel. But Jerry Rudzinski says maybe we shouldn't be too surprised. He explains why in the latest Captain's Corner.
I actually don't think that the Bills made a bad pick with Whitner. He's gonna be a really good safety. :rofl2: McCargo on the other hand...
McCargo on the other hand mightve been the steal of the late first round. It was clear this guy wasnt going to make it to the 2nd round. On most scouts' boards he was the 3rd ranked DT, regardless of what freakin Mel Kiper or Scott Wright say. People called Tatupfa a reach last year too, Kiper was absolutely infuriated he went that early. How did that work out?
Yes, Donte is a good safety and is going to be a good safety. But the Bills picked him to fill a big hole left by Milloy. I just have a problem using rookies to fill needs (other than OL and RB) in the NFL because it is at such a different level than college. Good chance to bust. Good for us
McCargo was decidedly average at NC State on a defensive line with 2 bona fide first round picks taking up the offensive line's attention. I have no doubt in my mind that McCargo was the reach of the draft.
Decided by who? By you? You and Kiper? McCargo was constantly in the opponents backfield making plays. And it had nothin to do with Mario Williams and Manny Lawson taking pressue off him. Even when he was double-teamed he showed great strength and superior technique in using his hands to split the block and penetrate into the backfield. He will thrive in an aggressive scheme like Buffalo's
Yes, decided by me. And just about every draft expert in America agrees with me. McCargo is a pass rushing DT who did not register a consistent # of sacks despite playing between two all-american quality defensive ends. There's no way he was worth the #26 pick.
If every draft expert includes guys like Mel Kiper and Scott Wright, you can have your rankings. But many scouts had him 3rd behind Bunkley and Ngata. His sack #s were fine for a DT, its very rare for a tackle to put up the #s of an end. But he led his team in TFL's a QB pressures. I guess you could liken it to DRob's performance in '04. He is the absolute right fit for a team like Buffalo that has so much talent on defense. I expect them once again to claim their title as one of the best defenses in the NFL this year
