After looking at the stats in the first four games, I notice a very strange trend emerging for this team. We brought Sparano here to facilitate our "ground & pound" strategy, yet only our pass protection only seems to have benefited from Sparano's takeover. As a team, we have only let up 7 sacks this year which ranks us at #6 tied in the league (we are #17 in passing attempts). This is an improvement over last year when we let up 40 sacks which had put us at 20th in the league. Despite this, our run game suffered to an average 3.1 yards a carry, which is ranked 28th in the league. I believe that this is because of Sparano's man-blocking scheme that our players simply do not fit in. D'Brickishaw, Mangold, and Moore are not physical mauler type of guys and as a result they are looking like crap this year. I think that our offensive can not truly be as bad as they appear to be. So why was Sparano brought here to implement this if it doesn't seem like his style is a good match for this team?
Oh fuck yeah. Brick and Mangold look like their 06/07 versions, also in a man block scheme. Very disappointing start by the OL, can't expect it to get much better. Howard has been better than Hunter though.
I asked about this when I first got here after the Tebow trade, and iirc, a number of posters indicated that it was basically silly to think that linemen might be good in one system and not in another. Whatever the reason, the OLine just isn't opening holes/seams that much and it needs to be fixed. That said, whether it's Man 2 man or ZBS, Slauson would still need to pull now and then and this is something he seems to be incapable of.
Wwell, we're a ground n pound team but we dont have any RBs. We run a lot of 3-4 but we have no LBs that can get to the QB. Wwe traded for Teblow but have absolutely no package or position for him on the team. Wwe spent the 5th overall pick on Sanchez but never gave him any WRs. Wwhy would the O line scheme fit our talent? Wwe have zero plan. Its all by the seat of our pants.
Ground n pound requires a RB with stellar vision. Greene can move a pile sure but he consistently makes it a point to slam right into defenders and his own lineman. He fucking sucks
Hiring a guy with no previous OC experience and/or history of success at the position was a very strange move. I think people (myself included) figured anyone had to be better than Shotty. Not sure it will pan out that way. They should be embarrassed with how they talked up the "SUPER SECRET TEBOW LED WILDCAT" to absolutely no positive results through 4 games. Watching San Fran run it as the Jets D looked like they have never seen it was very frustrating. That being said, there really is no talent on offense. I hate Holmes, but he was the only talented skill player they had.
You mean there might be an adjustment period for a new offense? Things are looking worse than they probably should, but we're only 4 weeks in. Plenty of time to turn it around. I'm of the opinion that lack of talent at running back is a bigger problem. How much will blocking help if Shonn Greene tries to run over people instead of around them?
I agree this might not be the best fit for brick and more. Howard is a Mauler and so is Vlad. If we can get Vlad and Howard going on the left side we should be able to run that way....hopefully.
I forgot about the whole new man blocking scheme. That's probably a good reason why we have been shit at run blocking. An Greene still is kinda shitty.
and all i ever heard here was schottenheimer was the cause of every negative and getting rid of him would be the answer to all ur problems....
Well, uh, for the record, and I don't mind taking what pleasurecan be taken in the middle of this huge mess, in saying I told you so to all the Schotty Haters here, I and a few others did not buy at all that Schotty was the cause of all the problems on O. So I will officially take a bow and thank you all very much for recognizing I was right and all the Haters were wrong. Now to be clear I never said Schotty was a great OC. Hardly. But I did say it was not enough to get rid of him, that you had to replace him with someone, and i was skeptical that Sparano was a good choice. And I also said most of the problems on O were with the roster and not the playcalling. THis is one I am sorry to be right about. But in all this shit I can take some satisfaction. You all should listen to me more the next time.
He was Co OC. He called run plays while Haley called pass plays. Not the same thing I know but its some PC experience.
I think its time for Ducasse to step up and take over for Slauson. Slauson doesn't have what it takes to be a guard in a man blocking scheme. Every time they run in his direction he gets no push or pull its pretty bad. Give Ducasse a shot and see what you got.
