I'm assuming there is a TV programme in USA named something like Revis Island, judging by references / avatars I've seen. I get most lines/nicknames but I'm afraid this one has been lost in translation between America and England. Someone please help!!!
Because Revis plays man coverage one on one with a receiver all game long, it's as if they are out "on an island". Hence Revis Island, because usually that receiver does jackshit when covered by Revis.
There is no reference outside football that I know of. Teammates just started saying how receivers were getting stranded on Revis Island, and then there were a few articles that used the phrase and now it's gone viral. Someone correct me if I'm wrong about the reference part though.
As far as I know, there is an area around Revis where you can't complete a pass. That are is called the Revis Island. I could be wrong but thats what I always assumed.
When a CB in the NFL is asked to single cover man to man they are being put on an Island seperate and apart from the rest of the D. When Revis is put out on the Island, he owns it.
Righto, seen an avatar with that drawf actor from a Bond film and thought there must be a TV reference. Then with Ochocinco talking about being an inmate going wild on Revis Island I figured it must be some sort of TV prison!! Thanks for putting me straight!
The first response was correct. Cornerbacks are often considered to be "out on an island" because of their pre-play positioning on the field in most cases. They are "singled-up" with a WR, just the two of them, rather far away from where the rest of the players are lined up.
Yeah, yeah. But most importantly in order to pass into New York, you must first go through Ellis Island. Ellis and Revis are both two syllable words that end in -is. Oooh the irony
The avatar with the dwarf IS a reference to a 70's/early 80's TV show known as Fantasy Island. The dwarf (Herve Villisomethingorother) was an actor on the show
No, the irony is that the phrase was started by a TV commentator in week 2 against the pats and on the particular play where Revis stopped a pass, he had Rhodes hovering over him a couple of yards back ie. not on an island.
Revis island is a very small island outside of Australia where the natives are notoriously bad at catching footballs. Not many people know about it.
