I have been a Jets fan for over twenty years and I think the world of Chad. He is a great leader and a good QB. However, if his arm strength does not improve, I have serious doubts about Chad as a long term solution. Last year, he was unable to run the 2:00 offense....a situation where he is forced to win the game with his arm. I think Kellen Clemens will start in 2008 and the Jets will not win a Super Bowl in 2007....young QBs need real game experience.
Oh no.... Get ready for about 15 pages of feverish debate.Only problem is this debate has taken place about 50 times already
People really need to start realizing that any QB can take any team to the Super Bowl. Why? Because QBs aren't the end all be all of football. They get all the credit, but its bull. Chad can do it, I'm just one of those shallow fans who find it more pleasing to have a more traditional QB to do it.
Listen, I understand your point about the QB not taking the team however there is a reason why QBs get paid gobs of money and you need a QB that can make all of the throws.
"Any QB can take any team..."? I don't agree with that at all. A crappy QB (read: Trent Dilfer, Rex Grossman) needs to be on a special team to reach a Super Bowl.
Chad's as likely to win a Super Bowl as the 32nd ranked rush defense. Oh wait... Seriously, could Chad take us to a Super Bowl win in the right season if everything else fell perfectly in his path? Sure. But he couldn't do it with an average rush defense, let alone the worst in the league. That's the crux of the issue, having Chad instead of a great QB puts a lot of pressure everywhere else and makes it unlikely the Jets will win a Super Bowl with him at the helm. Peyton Manning showed us the kind of QB that it takes to win a Super Bowl when everything else is not just right.
In this day and age, you need either an elite QB and somewhat solid team around him, or an elite team with a somewhat solid QB. Pennington is somewhat solid, the only way he'll ever take anyone to the Superbowl is if he is blessed with a stacked, elite team. the question is do we build around him, trying to create that team? Or do we try and find an elite QB to go with our team?
I think that chad DOES have what it takes to get (note: not lead) us to the big game, however, its not all on him. With a solid team around you it really doesn't matter who you have at QB (Rex, Trent). I think the bigger question which is getting overlooked is if he can stay healthy the whole season, again. Was last year a fluke or is it really a new Chad?
SO we just need to get a super defense like both Dilfer and Grossman had the luxury of. Then Chad's our man.
Well, Pennington is better than Dilfer and Grossman. For the Jets to win a SB with Pennington, they need a top 10 defense (but not necessarily an all-time classic defense) and a good balanced attack on offense (last year's turdy run game will not get it done).
Funny you should bring this up. I just watched the reply of Jets-Titans week 1 today. Please watch that game and tell me what passes chad cant throw. He completes every pass in the book in this game. 50 yard bomb to Coles. 15 yard out to Coles etc etc. Please watch this game and tell me what throws chad cant make because he made every throw in the book in that game.
Yes. Nobody can really do it by himself. Even Manning this year, while his rush defense was terrible all year, they played really well throughout the playoffs. Chad's carried the team in the past. 2002 he carried the team, and at times this year he carried the team as well. We won 10 games this year without any running game and a bad rush defense. Improve both of those and he can win a superbowl imo.
chad will only be our starter for this year and possibly next year, but probably not in 2009...and do i think the jets are getting to a super bowl in the next 2 years...no, so i have to go with no on this one
Can we assemble an elite team before Pennington runs out of gas? Nobody trades away a truly elite QB. We'd have to have such a horrible season that we'd be in position to draft one. If that happens, Pennington is done anyway.
