what we have to realize including myself is any player the jets get on draft day will be the best for the team. All of us have our opinions on who should be are picks and if there not our team will stink. We just have to know the front office knows better than any of us and they are working themselves to death so they could make the absolute best choice. So just remember that any move this team makes is just a small part of a way larger plan.
we should trade down from #4 for a teams 2nd round pick and 2007 1st round pick... package our first round picks together next year to move up to draft the elite QB (Brady Quinn) if it is proven that Penny is done and Ramsey isnt the long term solution
why wouldnt you want that? We would still have 2 first round picks this year, another mid-round pick, and 2 first round picks in '07
I agree. The PGA Tour would be a much more appropriate topic for the New York Jets forum, three weeks before the draft.
Hey dwalsh, I totally agree with you. I would probably try to trade the 29 for a second rounder this year, and a #1 next year though. I have been saying this over and over again. Quinn next year is the guy to look at. Give up one of our stockpiled picks this year, and set us up for next year. We still don't know if either Penny or Ramsey could be the QB to get us to the promised land. Unfortunately, everyone around here seems to be acting like we suddenly improved enough to make the playoffs this year, and we are only a player or two away from a January run.
Lets recap the past, shall we? Ken O'Brien Blair Thomas Jeff Lageman Dave Cadigan Roger Vick Anthony Becht Bryan Thomas Robertson, Vilma, Pennington (when he was healthy) and Johnson were the best first round picks we saw in a while. In terms of the "best for our team", I'm not so sure I can say I have the confidence in them. I trust Mangini, and the FO has had promising picks the past couple of years, but I lost respect and trust in our drafting a while ago.
Hey now ... Ken O'Brien was not a bad QB at all. He was plagued by terrible O-lines, and worse coaching year after year.
WHy would we trade for a pick next year when this is one of the best draft classes to come out in awhile.
Simply because you shouldn't waste picks, just because you have them. Yes, this is a fantastic class this year. We also have a stack of picks scattered throughout the draft, with quite a nice bunch on day 1. Yes, anyone we pick in round 1 can find a place on the team. Any of the first rounders this year will be starters wherever they land. The question for us is, at what cost? For argument's sake, let's say the Jets use the #4 to pick Leinhart. It's a "sexy" pick, and could be seen as the BPA. Does it make sense though? Honestly, regardless of how you feel about them, either Penny or Ramsey could be the QB to lead this team. We won't know until around November whether one of them is, or isn't the now and future of this franchise. Spending the pick on a QB now, who may not even pan out, is too big a risk. Leinhart/Young/Cutler are all big enough question marks that they don't immediately make the Jets better when they are picked. On that same line of thinking, yes, Brick will be a great player in the NFL. But does he immediately make the team better at his spot the moment he is picked? You can't honestly say for certain. Maybe he is phenominally better than Jones. Maybe he isn't. No one will know the answer to that question until at least January of next year. Does Hawk immediately improve the LB position the moment he is picked? That is a definite maybe. It would be a fairly safe pick, but does it address a critical need? We don't know how the LB corps we have right now will adjust to the new system. They are all talented, and could benefit from the closing of Herm's Happy Hippie Holiday Camp. I wouldn't complain about Hawk, but he fills a "perceived" need, rather than a substantative actual one. Now we look at Mario. Does picking him make the Jets better at his spot the moment he is picked? The answer has to be yes. He would be taking over for John Abraham, a LARGE void to fill, regardless of your personal feelings about him. As a plus, he is bigger than Abe, so it's an upgrade to what we had to begin with. Compare him to Thomas, and the difference is huge. I don't get it. This board flip flops over the course of a few weeks. Just a couple of months ago everyone was screaming to stop going for the BPA, and address actual needs. Now, everyone wants to go BPA, whether it makes sense or not. You don't have to agree with my assessments, but at least think about the impact of these players. Whoever they pick #4 is going to tie up A LOT of money over the next 3 to 5 years. He better be a true impact player.
