NFL Network draft special on Warren Sapp just sitting there for the Jets to pick. The fans were calling for it and then Rich Kotex picked Kyle Brady. Cleveland and Bill Bellichek were going to pick Brady but we beat them to it (yeah real lottery win there). Then they said Brady went on to have a good career with the Jets. I'm like are you kidding?
13 year career with 343 catches. Better than 99.5% of all the TE's ever to play in the NFL. Bust from a #9 pick perspective but a big win from a 2nd round plus point of view. Kind of like Bryan Thomas and D-Rob and a bunch of other guys the Jets reached for who were solid but not all we thought they were. And yeah, wasn't all he was cracked up to be with us but a solid NFL TE for more than a decade.
So, is this in reference to us potentially selecting a TE at 6 versus say a OLB, Safety ,CB or God forbid another no kidding rushing DE? Just asking?
We do need a TE and our new OC utilizes that position more than Gailey. But don't read too much into it. Its just a historical fact.
I don't think Brady will ever be reference with even top 30 TE to play in the NFL. He was a B-U-S-T for us and that is all that matters with Jets fans. He's not even mention as a good TE for the Jets. My list is Shuler, Caster, Barkum, Keller.
My gut tells me Mac will stay true to form and go with BPA as he and his team sees it. If they believe it to be a TE I'm all for it. Of course to your point missing on Sapp was a hard one to swallow. Can't believe they thought Brady was BPA at that point but who knows.
i was at that 95 draft and it was a huge let down when they picked brady. i mean a huge one. we were chanting for sapp and all - as everyone sees in the video clips. i have posted this before but i'll repeat it for completeness - it was kotite's pick and he ultimately overruled the personnel director at the time. i mean he was the GM according to Hess. in addition, they had a trade offer from cleveland and another team that i think was the 49ers, which they turned down.
