I will admit upfront that I don't know much about him, and that his combine numbers are what drew me to him. I watched some you tube videos, but doesn't really show much. The only thing I would be nervous about is his size as a project in the 3 round. Anyone know anything more pertinent about him?
He's another Arron Maybin type ATM. He's too small to constantly set his edge, keeping him from being a three down OLB for us right now. Tackles or pulling guards will simple engulf him, he may fair decently against TE's or a full back. He has some rush ability, but is a bit of a project as a 34 OLB with great upside as a pass rusher, but may never be a ture starter at the postion.
I have to disagree there about the Maybin comment. He's a power rusher, just in a smaller body. He's a natural when it comes to getting to the QB, and excels at getting to the QB by moving tackles thanks to natural strength, despite the small frame. He's one of those guys that might end up being best used as a 43 LB in an attacking scheme, but it will take a lot of work. I think a lot about what it would take to teach him to play inside LB in our scheme to replace Bart Scott, because it was done before with a college DE in Westerman, and he's used to taking on linemen in that WVU 3 man front.
Personally, I think with time he can be a very good player, I would suggest a team to bring him in and start him out in situational pass rushing downs then eventually ease him into a starting role. He can stop the run and has the athletic ability to drop back into coverage, I just think he needs to go to a team that wants to groom an OLB, not one who is looking to start an OLB out of the gate. He could surprise many in the future. Bruucceee Almightttyyyy!
Raw. 3rd year playing DE/OLB after starting out at WR. Great speed and enough power to bullrush some tackles(watch Rutgers in 2010). Put on some weight this past year which cost him his 4.3 speed and some sacks(although had more TFLs*), needs to learn to play at that weight or bigger. Struggles against the run, never completed a season at WV as a fulltime player(2 years). Has some scheme versatility as an OLB in a 43 and a 34, but needs time to learn. 3rd Round unless someone falls in love with him in the 2nd. There's always a few coaches that think they can teach a "raw athlete" football... *Thanks for the stat GH
He can rush aginst lineman, but I'm not sold on his Run D against an OT or Guard. He rushes with more power moves at WVU then we have seen out of maybin, but again, I don't see him as a classic NFL bull rusher type. He is not James Harrison. What he does he have is both extremely good quickness in his moves and acceleration. He may be good enough to start out side and swim inside, but if NFL tackles get ahold of him I don't see him using pure power to dirve them back easily like he did against some of the lesser OL he played in school. He looks to be very good with his hands in the pass rush, but holding the point is another monster entirely. He was not a full time guy at WVU let alone entering the NFL. He would be a good second round pick up if he last that long. 16 is far too high for a player like him IMO. He may also be a trade back option for us in the first.
No way he lasts til the 4th round. His talent level is above that first of all, and I can see some team falling in love with his measurables and picking him as high as the beginning of the 2nd round.
Ummm ... ^This. Irving is a bit of a project, but the guy can flat out get to the QB. Despite his not beign a full time player at WVU so team is going to grab him in round two or three.
I think he could be an Antwan Barnes type rusher, in that although his game is speed, he's got some strength. He seems like a good kid who I wouldn't mind having on special teams, but I don't expect him to be more than a situational sack guy. I'm not opposed to having as many of those as possible on this roster. Our pass rush sucks. -X-
Would be a great pick-up in the 3rd. Maybe even the second if we go in another direction in the first. However, depending on what happens between now and draft day, we might not have the luxury of taking a potential project that early in the draft. We should be able to get a quality WR, OL, or S in the 2nd/3rd, and obviously those are big priorities. I've said it before and I'll say it again, though... as a UConn fan, Irvin always stood out to me as a man among boys. The guy has the ability to create havoc in the backfield and his athleticism is rare for an OLB. I was not aware that he was recruited as a WR. IMO that only adds to his upside. He might not be able to start right away, but I think he could come in and contribute more than Maybin. He has the ability to rush the passer and could also hang with most TEs in coverage if need be (something we are clearly lacking at the moment)
He just got arrested for destruction of property... His stock will take a major hit. I dont get how these kids can’t stay out of trouble until Arpil 28th. Really?
He goes to West Virginia , every student has one of these charges. No surprise to me, he probably burned a coach .
http://www.wvmetronews.com/index.cfm?func=displayfullstory&storyid=51671&type= Sounds more like a kid being stupid than something sinister. His stock may take a slight hit and teams will look into it, but I doubt you'll see him free fall down draft boards.
Sign these bad mofuckas up! who knows, maybe they'll slide to our comp picks if they keep thuggin between now and the draft
