How many times have you heard that the front office/scouts for the Jets really like Jay Cutler, then they really like D'Brick...then rumors get released that the Jets might want to trade up for Leinart. All of this buzz is also leading me to believe that the front office is doing an excellent job drumming up action and interest for that #4 spot. That was something that most of this board was worried about a few months ago. I even remember someone saying the Jets are #4 in a three horse race(Bush, Leinart, Young.) It looks like the front office is playing all their cards right in a most critical time for this team. At least it looks that way.
I am definitaly liking Tannenbaum as GM. If the CBA gets done, we could potentially have $24 million to spend on free agency and the draft. I think they are hyping the #4 position very well, although, I am not a fan of trading down from it, unless we get such an offer that is impossible to refuse.
Tan is da man, how he worked the cap for us this year was simply amazing, once we dump Abe, we will have some real money to sign high draft picks or a couple of big name free agents, at least one. Hats off to Tan, god I shutter to think what things would be like if the old regime was still here...
I think the #4 spot is actually really valueable. With Cutler being such a desirable chip, they can get a lot for it when somebody drops.
Culter, Brick, or Young will be there at #4, some GM will give their draft away for one of those guys, espically the chance at a franchise QB.
This "trade down" theory is thrown around a lot. What exactly would appease the people that throw this around so often. When you say trade down, would you be willing to accept a switch from the fourth overall to lets say, the 12th and a second round pick? Do you want a player instead? (ala Johnny Johnson and Marvin Jones?). Missing out on the ten best players in the country to take a bit of a shot on a second round pick? This trade down theory is thrown around a lot. Perhaps its the best move for the team because of all the needs. Isnt it wiser to be able to get the 4th best pick in the country and answer the need that would get with a 2nd round pick with a free agent? I just believe when you get your ass whipped the year before and are rewarded with being able to get a fourth pick, you use it. I doubt there are any Terry Bradways that want to swap the eighth overall pick for a fourth pick and then a second round pick. With the top 3 pretty much set in stone...it would be unlikely. If there was a top five set in stone, I could see the pick being worth a bunch to someone drafting lets say, seventh.
Anyone wanting a franchise LT will want to trade up for Brick, so there is value. Cutler will go #7 to the Raiders, he is NOT a top five pick and to much a risk for some team to trade up for. I think the Titans kept McNair around for one reason, to tutor Young.
I must say, I love this new front office. The way they are dealing with the draft, the way they got us under the cap, etc.
If people were supporting the trades you suggested, I'd be shaking my head too. To go from 4 to 12, for example, usually gets you another late first, not a 2nd. Those who like Cutler would have us trade down to the 7-9 range, pick up an early 2nd rounder, and still get Cutler. Of course, these people think we should take Cutler at #4 anyway, so to them, trading down is something for nothing.
This is the way a FO is supposed to run shit... Big up to the FO:lol: Seriously though, their doing their job at a high level. This is what im talking about.
The reason trading dpwn has more appeal than in past years is that the prevailing opinion of scouts is this draft is very deep actually 34 player deep. Unlike most draft this year you will be getting quality selrctions far beyond the usual forst 10 or so.
I really like the buzz they are creating about the 4th pick. IMO the best tarde dwn would be with Atlanta, for the #15 pick and Matt Schuab. The Falcons say they don't want to trade Schuab but we must remeber they likely are cutting their LT. The idea of them trading up to get a franchise LT to protect the entire franchise might be enough motivation for them to give up Schuab.
I don't know, it's not much different than the Stock Market or horse racing in some regards if one really looks at it. Luck of the draw, the top isn't always the best litmus test. Nowadays they're using computer formulas for projections and pan outs instead of relying solely on instinct and an eye for pickin' 'em. Pollutes the imperfectness of it in my eyes. I always fancy the sleepers and surprise guys. Anyway, hopefully the draft won't be April Fool's Day for us....
That's a good job by the front office and Tannenbaum by explorin their options in the draft showing that they show interest to go either way.
